30 year old hi-fi ! Options for replacements.

Join the Audiokarma forums for loads of useful information about your old gear - http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/index.php I own a couple of bits of vintage gear (A&R Cambridge, Yamaha etc), and their forums have been invaluable for those little tweaks that help improve the sound.

    lack of bass

I assume this is unrelated, but if I output audio from my PS3 to my Denon 1707 AV receiver at the wrong bitrate, I also lose all bass. Ensuring CD/networked audio is output at the correct bitrate sorts it out. How do you have the CD player connected to the amp? A trational RCA phon pair of...

BBC HD has new encoders but slashes bit rates by 40% at same time

tvmog: They are probably thinking that we won't notice (or complain). Television broadcasters do not credit their viewers with much intelligence these days. I suspect you have hit the nail right on the head there.

BBC HD has new encoders but slashes bit rates by 40% at same time

I suspect Virgin PQ in general has dropped recently. Even our SD cable TV used to be far better than the rooftop aerial could muster (with HD being far superior again), but now I find the SD aerial picture is infinitely better and smoother than the SD Virgin picture - with the Virgin box doing...

    Tacima cs929 Mains conditioner query

Might be related, though I suspect not likely, but if I plumb my sub into the receiver output whilst the receiver is on, and a source (let's say CD) is also switched on (and both plugged into the same Tacima or Belkin surge protector) then the sub goes into a low rumble mode and I can only stop...

    Hmm why the left ear?

I'd be tempted to reverse-phase one of the speakers to see if the problem balances itself out, either through the weak side improving, or the strong side weakening. If nothing changes then you can eliminate cable connection errors, and be happy that the internal connections are all wired...

    DAB or FM reception

Loads of good info available here - http://www.aerialsandtv.com/fmanddabradio.html . With many thanks to this forum (and Chebby in particular ) for pointing me there in the first place.

Mains 260V AC is that Bad

We have one of those mains meter thingies. For ages it read high 230's consistently, with a dip in the vicinity of the kettle whenever it was switched on. Then two weeks ago it started reading 300-330 volts. I double-checked the reading with my multimeter and a suitably modified mains plug...

4 new Virgin HD channels announced

Ah, but ESPN in HD for 46 lovely ppremiership games this season is worth every penny. Just a shame Sultana spoilt it by only bidding for 23 games for the following three seasons, so ESPN has the same paltry figure to work with

    mains cables

The test could be simplified in one way though - it only need be about a change to the sound, not necessarily an improvement. The OP noticed his mains upgrades degraded his sound (definitely no placebo effect there, unless you count high expectations followed by massive disappointment into the...

    mains cables

al7478: Death to cable threads! Nah, death (or at least a serious tut-tutting ) to all those who pipe up into a cable debate saying it is "all a load of tosh and those who believe in it are fools", when those who DO believe (those honest and decent folk who have heard it with their own ears...

    mains cables

I wasn't going to join another cable debate because it anonoys the living-be-jeesus out of me that some people are so narrow-minded that they'll dismiss the findings of so many honest decent individuals simply because they'd rather believe science than peoples genuine experiences. But hey-ho...

vintage amps incl ye olde Pionner amplifiers - ie. SA508

I've seen that Marantz - what a piece of kit! I have to be honest, that question asked on here the other week about what to spend £50,000 on is an easy one in my opinion - it'd be nearly all vintage gear It's funny seeing the different preferences when looking at this old gear on Ebay too. A...
