Yes, I know this is an AV Receiver, but being new to the separates thing would this be a reasonable amp if I added a decent cd (Cambridge Azur 540) and speakers (BR2's), or would I be better off purchasing a dedicated amp as well?

You'd be better off with the likes of the Rotel RA-04 or a Cambridge 340A or 540A.
