Hi there

can not make my mind which one of these cinema amp to choose. Yamaha DSP-AX763 got only 2 HDMI inputs and no Radio tuner but 5 stars and Onkyo TX SR606 got 4 HDMI and radio tuner with only 4 stars but not bad review at all so it is really hard for me to choose one. Got opportunity to buy them for really good price Yamaha for £340 and Onkyo for just under £300 both brand new with waranty. Will pair it with Jamo A102HCS5. Want to use it for movies as well some music and games. Got Nintendo Wii, Dvd Recorder with hdmi and computer or notebook may be connected (both got hdmi). Also I plan to buy PS3.

Looking forward to any advice

Can't comment on the Onkyo, but mightily impressed with the Yamaha (having upgraded from a Denon AVR1906). As for the concern over the number of available HDMI inputs/outputs there are plenty of HDMI splitters available.

Must admit I'm staggered (but not surprised) to see this http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/4165

which I bought last month for £270, that's an increase of 28%!

The old adage applies, compare before you buy, if you can . . .

I know that Yamaha might be very good and RS got it on sale for £289 but they are mostly ex demo but main concern is that if I need to buy HDMI splitter it is gonna cost me extra money and may cause trouble with switching between sources. With onkyo it would be easier, but I am prepared to go for better quality at some extra cost. Local dealer is rubbish do not have any of these amps so I can not compare them in terms of sound quality ...

Hi

I recently went thru same process, but also included the Sony 820. Decided on the Yamaha 763 and have not regretted it for one minute, simply stunning results, when paired with Jamo 102s.

Hi,

How many HDMI inputs does your TV have?..ie. You dont have to run all your equipment through your receiver, so maybe the Yamaha 763 with only 2 HDMI inputs would suffice.

hi boyz and girlz, TV is Samsung LCD 46" 6series and it has got 4 HDMI so you are probably right with this, so I can connect some stuff straight to TV and sound thru receiver .... never thought about it this way

I would connect sky directly to the tv - that saves one input. But connect the optical/coaxial to the receiver for DolbyD.

Hi ValianTX,

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a question about the mains cable (Russ Andrews) you use with your onkyo?

How did you connect it to the amp, as the mains cable goes directly into the machine?

Has it made much difference to the sound? If so, in what way? Does it sound better with cd playback?

Thanks for any help in this matter..................

Hi Pistol Pete,

I used a Male IEC Pack from Russ Andrews. Cost £5.50 - a quick ten minutes job.

Don't have a detachable mains cable?
Our male IEC plug packs come with full instructions, but if you're unsure here's a step-by-step guide how to do it...

MaleIEC1.jpg
With equipment that has captive leads like this, to be able to use a Russ Andrews mains cable you need to wire on a male IEC plug. You are, ineffect, creating an inline socket (which is really no different from equipment that has an IEC socket fitted on the back). You'll be left with a socket that will accept any of our mains cables and is a great way to upgrade your equipment.

You will need a screwdriver, a pair of wire cutters, a ruler and... a male IEC plug and PowerMax PlusT or PowerKordT!

Step 1
MaleIEC2.jpg

WARNING! Make sure the equipment is unplugged from the mains

You need to shorten the mains cable on your equipment. We suggest trimming it down to about 8cm (3"). Feel free to practise on a longer length of cable, but you should aim to keep the trimmed cable to about 8cm.

MaleIEC3.jpg

Step 2

Strip the outer cable sheath back by 25mm, exposing the brown, blue and green/yellow (earth) wires. Don't worry if your equipment doesn't have the earth wire; not all equipment has it (as ours right).

Trim the brown (live) and blue (neutral) cable down to 20mm. If you have an earth wire, leave it at 25mm.

MaleIEC4.jpg

Step 3

Strip back the insulation on the cables by 5mm, exposing the copper cores. Twist the copper together to keep them neat (and give them a wipe with DeoxIT contact enhancer to help give a good contact).

MaleIEC5.jpg

Step 4

Open up the male IEC plug by removing the screw in the centre. Loosen off the two screws holding the cable clamp (you might want to remove it altogether, temporarily), and loosen the terminal screws.

MaleIEC6.jpg

Step 5

Thread your prepared cable through the gland and fit the prepared copper cores into the neutral, earth and live terminals - they are marked from left N,
earthsymbolPX15.gif
and L. Make sure all strands of the cable are located in the terminals and tighten down the screws

Step 6

Refit the cable clamp and tighten it down. It should grip the outer cable sheath and not the individual wires. you might need to move the cable to ensure the clamp is in the correct place. Don't tighten the clamp too tight - it should hold the cable in place but not crush or deform it unduly.

Refit the top and you're done. Now all you need to do is fit a PowerMax PlusT mains cable, or a PowerKordT and enjoy your upgrade!

Thanks for that, ValianTX.

Did it make a decent difference to the sound quality once using the replacement mains lead?

If so, in what way? Does it improve the two channel cd playback significantly, as Trevor79 suggests with his Onkyo 875?

(I'm using the Onkyo 606 with the Marantz CD63 KI Signature cd player.)

Thanks..........
