Yamaha DSP-763 or Onkyo 875?

Ok so in terms of power the 875 is on top but has any technology changed sufficiently that would make the 763 or 863 from Yamaha a better bet considering:

I have the 763 on order @ £322 and

The Onkyo tends to go 2nd hand for ~£400?

I'd like to know the opinion of experienced people since this is my first system. I will be pairing it with the Tannoy arenas with TS500 sub.

I would take the Onkyo.....it's better specced and should be at least equal in sound quality.

I know its a strange comparison - I guess the amps are in completely different price brackets but I wanted to check nothing had been introduced in the 763/863 series or that the 875 wasnt overkill for the Tannoys.

I will put out feelers for a used amp this weekend and see if anything comes in before the Yams are back in stock.

The Onkyo will be good for an upgrade or two speakerwise too. I think that the 876 wasn't a great deal of an upgrade over the 875 which says a lot for the 875

The Onkyo 875 without a shadow of a doubt. It will wipe the floor clean with the Yamaha 763.

The Onkyo 875 was a bargain when it was @ £1000, how they built such a high spec product weighing in at half a CWT was amazing.

For what you can pick them up now for is a no brainer.

Thanks Trevor, it was partly from your posts that I decided to start looking at getting one for a bargin over the 763/863 on order. I just need to try and find one now ><

This may be a daft question but since the Tannoy arenas are rated to 100w will the Onkyo damage them since it is listed as 200w per channel?

You will not damage you speakers unless you turn the volume up far too much. You are more likely to damage speakers with an under-powered amp which clips (sends a square wave to the speakers heating up the voice coils).
