Can anyone clarify for me please. If I connect an hdmi cable from the 360 to an amp and then a HDMI lead from the amp to the TV then i will get the picture + the 5.1 surround sound?

I have read on numerous forums that the XBOX360 only does stereo through HDMI.

Cheers

timwileman:you could bin it and get a PS3..... :)

Only problem then would be he'd have a very poor selection of games to choose from ;)

And then be like all PS3 owners with no killer games to play!!! ( I own both and definatly prefer my 360 for games)

But back to the point in this thread AFAIK the 360 does not output 5.1 over HDMI only the Optical output but your amp should be able to handle both conected at the same time. The 360 operates in the same way as a lot of DVD players in that it can not output 5.1 over HDMI for fears of copyright infringement (even my Denon 3930 does not output 5.1 over HDMI)

Not wanting to cause a PS3 Vs 360 fight as personally as both systems have some excellent exclusive titles but doesn't the PS3 output 5.1 over HDMI? If so, how come copyright infringement isn't an issue for them?

I think with the PS3 it does as technically its a BD player not a DVD player. AFAIK no DVD players output 5.1 over HDMI.

As for the 360 ELITE I don't know as both my 360's are a original one and a newer white HDMI one.

from further reading i believe that any 360 with hdmi can output 5.1 audio via hdmi so you're ok for Dolby Digital ect - none of the 360s will output lossless pcm for True HD - i believe they will output 2 channel lossless pcm but nothing more.

I have to say, I hate using my old skool Xbox 360 for anything, unless we're having a loud party with multi-player gaming... the reason is, it's just far too noisy for movies or peaceful gaming! It's actually awful, even if the picture and sound is pretty OK. Most of the time when I do any gaming on it (late nights), I use headphones so I don't need to hear the damm machine, but that feels so wrong to 'have' to use headphones.

Even my HTPC and projector put together don't even make half the noise as the Xbox 360 does!
I'm still unsure and unclear on whether the newer Xbox 360's make as much noise? ...and I'm not wasting more money on my Xbox 360 with a hybrid Lian li case.

PS3 hasn't this issue, but then it's such a 'boring' machine when it comes to games. The only games that seem worth playing are either budget games available on-line, like Wipe-out HD or those available on the PC as well... and on the PC, the games are far better graphically and audio-ably, especially on a big screen!

My elite makes less noise, but anyway noise wont be an issue once the new update kicks in on the 19th of Nov as you will be able to install the game on to your lovely 120gig hard drive! If you look on IGN they have videos of how it will sound once the game is installed and believe me its as quiet as the console is while its just on the dashboard.
