Only if you are going to use those features, I have a sc-lx85 but no 4k TV or blu ray player.

my intention is to replace the lot in one go around july this year, but until i have a 4k chain i am not missing anything.

It's down to what you want to achieve in the end.

Thanks guys.

I was speaking with a shop yesterday and they said you can still hear a difference on Dolby Atmos and DTS X without the extra speakers, is this true? Thanks.

I have run some Atmos / DTS X demo material through my system and there is definately a difference in sound.

This however may be that the material is made for demo purposes. Try to get hold of some demo blu ray discs.

Search ebay for blu ray dem disc, then select UK only, a few will show up.

Thanks a lot. I haven't got a new amp yet, I am trying to borrow the Yamaha 3060 and waiting to hear back today.

Not with Atmos. If you don't have Atmos speakers, sound will revert to the base layer, which is Dolby True HD (which even your Pioneer can decode). With DTS:X, yes, theoretically you may get improved sound as it can work in any speaker configuration. I remain sceptical though, in the absence of extra speakers.

Cheers BB.

Got a loan of the Yamaha 3060 for probably next week. I am quite excited to listen to it. Thanks.

I can't believe I will have no Pioneer gear left if I like this Yamaha. Shows a changing of the times I suppose, and my tastes changing and Pioneer going to pot.

I heard the 3060 in a Sevenoaks demo room- sounded good to me but totally different speakers and set up to what I've got!

One advantage with the newer receivers is they pass through 4K so you won't need the extra HDMI lead you use now from your 4K blu Ray player to TV.

It may be that the disc is mastered to impress with it being a demo disc. There is a difference to the sound over what i know my system sounds like.

I do realise that I do not get Atmos with no Atmos speakers.

Ah cheers mate, I think they mentioned some about pass through 4K but didn't really know what they meant at the time when I was asking for its good bits about the amp. Yep, I have never heard a Yamaha amp on my speakers but my Dad's B&W XT speakers and pv1 sub and that sounded really good too. I think I am looking for a more refined sound now, so I can listen to music Blu-rays over and over again. Hopefully that's what this Yamaha amp will give me.

I can remember back in the 70s, car radio-cassettes (quite a step up in technology at the time) came with demo tapes, that were specifically mixed to "impress" new owners. Usually Herb Alpert or James Last or similar big band / orchestral pieces.

TVs have demo modes or showroom modes or something like that where the brightness and contrast of the material is artificially bossted the make "their" TV stand out in the display of sixteen others. Of course, al the other TVs are put on the same demo mode, defeating the object of the exercise, but it's important to remember that and to try out any TV in regular display modes before you take it home. Unless your name is gel, of course.....

Never "heard" of demo modes for AVRs, although it wouldn't suprise me if music (Dire Straits Brothers in Arms, for example) and / or movie clips are specifically selected to have the most dynamic "moving around" of the sound fields.
