Would new breed tvs decode dolby or dts..?

Now with the very new breed of tvs you can watch movies from the likes of Netflix amazon & prime instant video, but why have these tvs not got the ability to decode the sounds in either dolby or dts..? Companies like LG & Samsung work with Netflix to stream movies to your tele. Especailly with 4k content. Why would i want to watch high res videos when my tv is still sending pcm audio to my AV amp.

Would like to hear any contribution or thoughts about this.

PCM is a lossless format and actually better than Dolby as it is uncompressed.

However, TV programmes, Netflix etc. use a compressed format like Dolby Digital because they occupy lesser bandwidth.

Ok if you say so. But how do you then decode the real cinema sound & place effects as the director intended..? Surely this cannot be done with PCM audio.

May i asked the wrong question. My question was not really about sound quality but the ability to decode suround sound like the director intended. For example if am watching a tv programe on freeview in pcm or dolby digital will the tv out this to my amp.

PCM is studio master, so just as the director intended. Dolby, DTS etc. are compression formats of the same studio master.

But TV programmes, Netflix etc. tend to compress it with loss of quality to save on bandwidth.

All AV receivers can decode PCM, and almost all AV receivers decode Dolby. So you should be fine.

I got fed up of passthrough and bought a cromecast for my av receiver instead. Plays plex and Netflix very well, just wish it had ethernet.

Nice. Foolish me. I had my sky HDMI output set to normal instead of dolby digital. I was off the impression tvs could not distinguish the type of audio being output. Well they say you learn everyday.

Edit: But am sure some tvs sets still would not decode or recognise a signal type & just output it as a 2 channel signal.
