Wood Cones . . .

So, I’ve had a couple of weeks one way and the other, loads of music listening. Bought some used vinyl, 5 albums and a boxed set, £12 worth some great music, one is a duff I think, needs a wet clean to be sure, before I throw it out?

I was looking through fleaBay, came across some Rosewood cones, £18 for 4 . . . ordered them and forgot. Doorbell rings this morning, postie with a package from Honk Kong, my rosewood cones. I thought they were worth a try, seen people get very excited about inverted cones of various types?

Fitting took a few minutes, evaluation . . . they work, the changes are small, some extra bass extension, a little more warmth and subtlety, another two or three per cent in the right direction . . . I'm not rushing to remove them, yes, well worth the £18 . . . plus it was a refreshing change to see the trouble the person in Hong Kong had gone to, to package them.

I fixed them with Blu-Tack as I do with speakers to stands:

Even if they had no effect, they look nice . . . to my eye

And then to top it all off, I had a phone call from an old friend I have not seen for a long time. We used to go boating and fishing together, looks like I will be getting my fishing rods out of store and testing my sea legs again . . . after the past 12 months I need a pick up . . . :cheers:

I was thinking about your TT set up whilst i was away having some snap and your photos have answered a non asked question.

Have you given any thought to nailing the sucker to a wall shelf ?.

Regardless , as you say, if the cones do owt or not, they look pretty 8)

Yep Floyd, plenty of thought . . . but my wheels turn exceeding slow in the 'permanent' and 'spend lots of money' departments . . . : especially 'lots of money'? We have an old, very old, oak wardrobe upstairs, Hazel is busting to get rid . . . you have inspired me, the solid oak sections would strip down nicely to make a cantilever wall support? I think I can eliminate any need for a shelf using pads 'Rega style', but make the pads adjustable for levelling, the cone feet will help . . . :? Yes, thanks for the nudge Flyod.

I know you are OK with my spelling Floyd, but some people do like to ‘extract the water’ on a monotonously regular basis.

I think it needs to made clear that no-one is being nasty or malicious ( had to check the dictionary to make sure I spelt this right ! ) towards you when they pick up on your " alternative spellings" , it is just that what you write often conjures up images in peoples minds that are not what you intend but they find amusing . However , just think , in the future , whenever the phrase " dying breed" is used around anyone on this forum they will remember you and images of dyed bread long after you have travelled to " The Great Listening Room In The Sky" . So you will become a legend !

Nick, no offence, the 'dying breed' made me smile, I suspected it was wrong at the time but has no thesaurus, and in any case none of us are Mr Perfect! . . . I know I get it wrong, out of my control as you know?

Its the history attached to some individuals that is the problem, been going on for some time . . . I have two options, take the 'put downs' and they are put downs, and be a mouse squeak, squeak? I have had 65 years to work out 'which are which' despite the explanations, or I kick and be a man . . . not so much fun being on the receiving end, if you give it out you have to be able to take the consequences, especially the drip drip build up over time . . . ?

Where is the two layer 'Broken Bell' support doodad that you made?

I only see one layer.

Chebby, the support has evolved, the top layer was granite, the board there now is still the asymmetric machined 'broken bell'. I found that the granite was storing energy, I also found the original supporting spikes were not helping and the support positions were critical.

All part of my tweaking, to extract the most from what is there. So now, no granite, the wood blocks were found to be better, replacing metal spikes. The mahogany wooden blocks were drilled, 6mm taped and dumpy spikes were added for levelling, they were also moved around to find the best spots . . . no, I thought it was a bit OTT as well, but it has an effect. It is amazing , you can feel (by touch) the energy in the board and feel it changes as you move the spike blocks around only by a centimetre or two . . . ?

The Rosewood cones are guilding the lily. One hears and reads the claims for such items, I tried sorbathane half ball, 'god’s gift it would seem'? . . . that did not work for me, on the TT or under the Croft valve amp. So, why should the wood spikes work, at least looking pretty? However they do help, adding a solidity to the sound, having had some time to evaluate further . . . better? . . . as I have often put forward, in this case I say 'different', I like the difference, so for me its better but very small.

I look forward to when I can put my TT on a wall mounted 'light, in weight' cantilevered oak(?) support, I think then they may add more to the sound as well as something to the looks?
