Does it work like previous versions in that I can download programs from the net and install them? Or is it like iOS devices in that it's a closed system using 'apps' that can only be downloaded through its store?

Thanks. The reason I ask is that at present I have a laptop and tablet. I see the new surface pro claims to combine the two. On the laptop I mostly use VLC, iTunes and uTorrent. And copy photos from phones/cameras to print.
