Why is it 99% of A/V amps are receivers, but stereo receivers are viewed as really outdated?

Headline says it all really. How comes with A/V amps a tuner is pretty much de rigeur. But with stereo it's all just about the amp? I dunno about you guys, but I would have forgone the tuner on my 875 for a bit of a price cut. Perhaps If an on-board tuner is supposed to degrade the sound of the amp somewhat, why do they even bother sticking them in A/V amps in the first place? Surely if you wanted a tuner, you'd buy a tuner?

Those big 'ole beasts take up so much room on the rack, there's no space for a separate tuner

But seriously - at home we use the FM tuner on our receiver almost every day: the quality is excellent (if totally out of step with the DAB radios in other rooms...)
