Why do I have black bars top and bottom of my films?

Hello,

title is a bit misleading as I understand about aspect ratios (well, the basics anyway). But yesterday I watched Iron Man 1 on bluray, playing out of a first gen ps3 connected via hdmi to an onkyo ts xr607 amp, connected in turn to a sony kdl 40x2000 (think thats the correct designation). The bluray box said anamorphic, so I expected my whole screen to be filled, yet I had the black bars.

Also, when watching a dvd through an old dvd player (anamorphic dvd), I get my screen filled (dvd player connected direct to tv, with optical out to the amp), but same dvd played through my sony freeview recorder/player (hdmi to amp, no direct conneciton to tv) I get black bars.

I guess the problem is with the amp, but I can see anything in the instruction book that covers this - does anyone have any ideas please?

Iron man is filmed in 21:9, and your tv is 16:9, Blu rays are encoded at 1920x1080p including the black bars as I know it, and is still listed as anamorphic, movies like District 9 and Hurt Locker which are filmed at 16:9 will fill your screen without any problems. So I would say you have no problems there.
