Guys i am thinking about getting my first Plasma/LCD and have chosen either the Panasonic TH-37PX80B or Panasonic TH-42PX80 and would appreciate your thoughts on which one gets to live with me

Depends on your viewing distance. 8ft or more, go for the 42" definitely, even closer if you are into lots of HD.

I have the 37", only mistake I made was not getting the 42"

Seriously, when faced with the size choice, you do see people regretting getting the smaller size, but rarely hear of people regetting getting the larger size. They do grow on you.

Like Rewerb says it depends on your viewing distance.

I sit about 10ft away from my 42" PZ85 and it's perfect. Has the cinematic quality for films without being OTT, and SD looks good from that distance as well. HD or upscaled dvd's through my PS3 look amazing no matter how close you sit.

It seemed HUGE compared to my old 32"crt I used to have, but after a week or so you soon get used to it. I wonder sometimes if I would of been better with a 46", but it would deffinately of been to much especially for SD viewing.

Everyones tastes vary so try and have a look in a store at the 37-42" at your home viewing distance. Make sure to look at SD content as well, if it looks rubbish at your viewing distance you might be better off with a smaller screen size.

We recently bought a 37PX80B which looks huge compared to the old 19" Philips CRT we had, but it does look good. Our decision was whether to go for 32" or 37". Our decision was based on what we would be viewing, which is mainly Freeview and some DVDs which would be played on an 'old' DVD player. (We're yet to upgrade to a Blu-ray player, which will happen at some point.) Our decision was slightly different because it was LCD v Plasma. Plasma is definately more forgiving for Freeview, especically if you have 20/20 vision like my partner, even over our viewing distance which is about 3m, at the shortest and up to 6m (approx) at longest.

You do get some pixelation/banding, even on the plasma, therefore if you are going to be watching Freeview especially on fast moving such as sport or images containing objects that are very sparkly. I would suggest trying both out in the shop first and standing roughly as far away as you would be in your home, and watch a variety of channels/program types. (We did a number of times in John Lewis.)

My other piece of advice would be, whichever one you do get, take time to set up the colour scheme and sharpness, especially if you are going to watch Freeview. I have to admit to being dissappointed for the first 24 hours after unloading and installing our screen. However, after playing with the settings and changing a couple of cables, the picture the quality is much improved (and I'm a much happier person).

We couldn't have fitted a 42" screen even if we wanted to. However what size you go for depends on the space in your living room and how dominant you want the screen to be. This was the real challenge for my partner. She didn't want a huge screen to dominate the room as we have some quite dominant features already and therefore preferred the size of the 32", but similary the picture quality needed to justify the cost. Ultimately that's what decided it. The 32" LCD was at least £100 more expensive than the 37" Plasma.

Finally, we have a 16 week old little girl. She never really noticed the old 19" screen. However as soon as the new screen was installed and working she couldn't take her eyes off the bright colours and peoples faces.

I too have a 42PZ85 and sit about 7ft away and moved up from a 32" LCD. The screen seemed big enough at first and for Freeview is watchable. I notice artefacts as I did on my 32" LCD but it is acceptable.

Upscaled DVD looks great and Blu ray excellent. I am considering the 50" Pioneer 5090 because most Blu rays are produced in 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 format with black bars at the top and bottom. I am confident that a screen that size for HD would be fine.

It may prove too big for SD but I am fortunate that I could put the 42" in the other room for SD viewing.

My point is that you could quickly regret the 37" so space permitting get at least a 42" and also consider full HD such as the PZ85 or PZ81 (freesat). If you will watch a lot of HD, consider the 46".
