What is the best cable to link my sky+ box to my onkyo ht-x22hdx 5.1 surround system. There is no hdmi connection avaliable on back of sky box, only coaxial or optical. Which would give the best sound and could anyone recommend brand of cable to go for many thanks.

There should be very little difference between the two, although I have read somewhere that the coaxial shades it slightly, even though I can't hear the difference.

If you go for optical try the true colours industries coral a well rated cable for about £30.00

Thirty quid for an optical cable?

Are you having a giraffe? I would save your cash and get something like the Fisual Pro for a fiver and spend the rest on blurays.

It's identical to a QED cable I have that cost me five or six times as much.

As far as I'm aware sky+ boxes only have optical connections. I am not aware of any with digi-coax. The latest sky+hd boxes have both which are required for DD5.1 as sky+hd boxes do not transmit discrete multi-channel audio over HDMI, only stereo.

Well he asked for a good cable, and I believe it makes a difference on optical cables.

FYI, there was a generation of boxes that had both optical and coaxial, I have one in my conservatory, I think they where made by Samsung.

The TCI Coral is an excellent cable - don't knock it till you've tried one

Generally 10% of system budget is roughly the right amount to spend on cables and given what its connecting, getting a better quality cable will ensure you can enjoy the best from your system and not then necesarilly worry whether you're missing the best picture and sound and need to upgrade again.

Agree, go for something cheaper as suggested above first, then if you are still left wanting audition the tci cable.

The 10% rule assumes that there are continual improvements to be had with cables. But outwith personal testimony which can be explained by 'in the mind' reasons, there is no evidence cables make a difference. I prefer the £10 rule as you can buy well made to spec cables easily for that price, unless you need very long runs.
