Hello,

Any ideas about which AV receiver suits best to the new Apex monitor audio speaker system?

Denon AVR1911, Denon AVR2311, Marantz SR5005, Marantz SR6005, or something else.........?

Regards,

Chris

The Apex package is a quality package, but for them to perform like a £2.5k package, the right amp is needed. Forget any AV receiver below £1k (rrp). Most will drive them fine, but these won't do it properly. The only amps under £1k I would recommend would be the Onkyo TXNR808, and possibly the 708. For the most part, we had them running on a Pioneer SCLX82, on which they sounded fantastic - which will put to bed before it starts any nonsense that they're too bright to be used with Pioneer amps.

I would strongly recommend you start looking at the Pioneer SCLX72, Onkyo TXNR808, Denon AVR3311 and Yamaha RXV3900.

Hi Chris

The new Monitor Audio Apex Series is a class act and is now imo probably the finest sub/sat speaker package available (amongst the UK manufacturers anyway) . I have also tested the Apex speakers with my reference Chord Electronics DSP8000/SPM3005. Whilst they are not up to ultimately revealing what the DSP8000/SPM3005 is capable of however they have shown they can admirably cope with the sheer onslaught of the this high end AV amplification.

I would choose the Denon AV amplifiers over the Marantz with the Apex speakers as from what i've heard the Marantz/Apex combination can sound rather flat. I would also avoid bright or forward sounding amps as some of my clients have also unfortunately found they are not really a good idea for long term listening.

Yamaha's RX-V2065 and RX-V3900 are also worth serious consideration however an amp which i have found to be a superb match for the Apex speakers (just as with the Silver RX Series) is the DSP-Z7. The DSP-Z7 is already more than good enough at its full RRP of £2300 however with DSP-Z7's generally available for around £1.4k makes the DSP-Z7 a bargain.

The Apex + DSP-Z7 is a combination which i believe you'll be happy with for many years to come.
