WHF team - Yamaha DSPAX 861 7.1 - Is this a quality av receiver?

Hi WHF team,

Can you comment on the quality of the Yamaha 861. It is available for £250 (RRP £699) and while I was originally going to purchase the Yam 863 (at over twice the price) I have now realised that I cannot use the improved hdmi 1.3a features of the 863 as I will be using a PS3 as the BDplayer which will decode all audio at source and transmit via LPCM to the receiver which the 861 will handle all latest audio formats fine with hdmi 1.2a.

All the rave reviews from WHF relate to the latest 763 & 863 models. I could not find many reviews on the 861 but I did find onereview relating to I assume the US equivalent which is very positive in general.

So before I go ahead, can you comment on the quality of the Yamaha 861 model and if you believe I am making the right choice given the price being offered? Thanks in advanceMark

Nope, don't know the 861, but then again haven't heard a duff Yamaha yet, so provided it does what you want it sounds like a pretty safe bet.
