I love Devon. Two of my favourite photographers were/are Devon photographers (
James Ravilious and
Chris Chapman), I have W.G. Hoskins book 'Devon' and we have all enjoyed staying in Devon (Moretonhampstead and Bampton) many times.
The best restaurant we have ever eaten in is in Devon (
Gidleigh park).
The people are fantastic, the whole county is gorgeous and I want to go back there already. (Last time we were there was five months ago.)
Except the Devonians long since left. The county is full of bloody londoners and the closest you get to the North or South Devon accent is John Cleese in old Monty Python re-runs on the TV.
Cobblers (did I mention I'm from Essex and a once removed Cockney?), our next door neighbours are pureblood Devonians, four of them have never left the country, there's a guy at the local tyre place with a Devon accent so thick I can't understand a word he says and I'm good with accents. Sure there are incomers here but that's the same in every part of the country, when I left school and started work in Essex there were ten people in my department, more than half of them were Scottish, 4 out of 6 of my pool team are Devonians and we're unusual because of the number of outsiders in our team.
Of course there's non-Devonians here but to say all the Devonians have left is arrant nonsense.
I'm in Tempere.
Never heard of it.
