Whats the best Blu Ray

I would recommend simply getting a PS3 which has a built in blu ray player. I would think you'd be hard pushed to find any noticable difference between this and the other players and besides it also does

1) Multi media - Playing many types of media in a nicely organised interface

2) Games

3) Web browsing

And many other cool features. It seems pointless to buy anything else for blu ray playing and would simply be a waste of money

Totally agree with Matt

Personally I believe that to really see a huge picture difference between a PS3 and another Blu Ray player you would have to think about the new £900 Denon Player

Having said that out of all 3 of the above Blu Ray Players, if you haven't already got a PS3, then the Panasonic is the one to go for that is If you can wait a little.

My local Panasonic Shop is selling this for £430.00 which is a bit surprising but given the current economic climate this may well fall under £400 in the build up to Christmas especially if you go into a shop say a week before and say for example that you've got hard cash in your pocket and what's the best deal they can offer....they might just bite!

I agree to some point but this will depend on your viewing source and viewing distance, for larger sets and projectors the newer bluray players like the Panasonic will improve pq and sound and the Denon will show a vast improvement other the rest. Im using a ps3 and have no problems teamed up with a 40" screen, but if i had 46" lcd or bigger i would opt for the Panasonic BD-55.

Depends on your budget and your needs. PS3 is good if you're a casual viewer, but it's noisy and uses a lot of power. It's not much use with amps that can't decode HD audio either. There is, of course, the added bonus of being able to play games and stream media.

I'm still waiting for a proper in-depth technical comparison of the Sony S550 and the Panasonic BD55, but the feature-set looks pretty much identical so it's largely a matter of price and availability (both are in short suply, but the Sony is cheaper). You're not going to see an appreciable difference in AV quality unless you got for something like the Denon, which are two to three times the price of the models you mention.

Why - PS3 decodes all HD audio formats onboard? I assume you mean because it doesn't have multi-channel out, you need an amp with HDMI socket that can accept LPCM, but it doesn't need to be able to decode the formats.
Personally, I'd only get a PS3 if you like the other aspects of it. For just Blu-Ray duties alone, I'd get the BD55.

Yes, I should have been more specific. I was talking about amps that lack HDMI or the ability to take multi-channel LPCM.

I agree, I have no interest in gaming and I use my pc for browsing. The PS3 is a gaming machine that happens to play BD. They don't look like an AV component. I would not have one on my rack and standalone BD players are cheaper and better at upscaling dvds and playing BDs. If you are not a gamer, it's a no brainer.

By the way Mentasm, I have had my S550 since Friday and it's amazing! DVDs look great upscaled and then bluray looks and sounds on a different planet. We watched a film last night and then the news on ITV afterwards and the difference was just ridiculous. The Pana 55 must either be so brilliant or just a smidge better (they both got 5 stars, if it was that much better, surely the Sony would have got only 4) or both. I've seen the Sony for £270!

Yeah, I got mine on Thursday and have been fairly impressed so far. Providing you set the options correctly, the internally decoded HD audio sounds great over analogues. The manual isn't very clear on how things should be set up though. The only minor niggles I have are that there's no frame advance/slow play and that the GUI is very low res compared to my previous machines. Other than that, it's very fast in all operations (loading, navigating etc) and not too far off of the speed of a PS3. I saw it for £270 on Pixmania, but they wanted £8.50 delivery. I got mine for £274.96 inc. delivery from Cheapelectricals.

The quality of the remote isn't bad. It's a bit plasticy as you'd expect at this price, but it's better than the last remote I used (for the BD-P1400) as the buttons are laid out in a more sensible manner. The blue back light is quite useful as well.

BD-Live is the online interactive portion of BD. It's a bit gimmicky at the moment though, usually just offering links to download trailers or take surveys. However, the new Iron Man BD has a cool quiz that allows you to answer questions on clips from the film, and in the future create and upload your own for others to try. The new Casino Royale has a Bond quiz where you play online against others to test your 007 knowledge, but it wasn't working last week. I'm guessing it's because it' wasn't officially released until today.

In the future BD-Live promises interactive commenary, where you and your friends can get online and watch a film together, chatting about it as you do so. There's a lot of other stuff it could do as well, such as offering additional bonus features after a disc has been released (commentaries, featurettes, trailers, additional languages/subtitles).
