After a Dansette record playert, followed by an in-car Philips record player that played juke box singles through a mono speaker (the original in-car system ever in the UK), then a Fisher portable record deck with 2 speakers in the lid which looked very like a Samsonite suitcase and was hurled around on airline baggage claim belts on at least 100+ flights with 100% reliability, my first proper system consisted of:

Deck: Linn Sondeck LP12

Amp: Exposure (think it was a 15...)

Speakers: Heybrook HB3 (the original big ones....)

Cassette Deck: Nakamichi (think it was a BX2.....)

CD player: Meridian (forgotten the model no..... 508?)

All bought from that specialist hi-fi shop next to the Camden Palace (before they sold out to Super-Fi).

I loved the sound from that system and kept it for years.

The best thing was, I used to listen to the music and not the system back in those days.... ! :)

When I was 18 , a long time ago now!, and I was working part time in a restaurant earning a meagre £4 per hour I saved up for what seemed like ages and bought myself a Musical Fidelity A1 Amp which ran so hot you could almost cook on it, Heco Interior reflex speakers, and a Yamaha CD player (can’t remember the model)

This system served me well for most of my adult life until about 7 years ago when I started to get back into Hi Fi and built my current system.

I ended up giving the Amp and Speakers to one of my mates who was a bit down on his luck at the time and they are still in use today some 24 years later which is amazing and they still sound basically the same.

If you look on 'I remember when' you'll find this. http://www.whathifi.com/forum/i-remember-when/your-first-proper-hifi

1993. Marantz CD52 Mk2. I'd owned a Sony midi system before and some kind of turntable with built in amp before that but this was my first 'proper' hifi equipment.

listened through my headphones initially, but quickly added KEF K120s and the amp that still sits at the heart of my main listening system, my Aura VA100 Evolution.

For my 18th birthday I got a hifi and after dismissing the all in one systems from the high street, I ended up with a one make system of separates starting with a Dual 505 TT, which was the de facto beginners rig of that era, Ortofon cartridge etc but I then went an blew it by getting Dual kit for the remainder plus some truly abysmal Kef Coda II speakers that made my ears ring for hours afterwards. Although you might argue that the Dual 505 has hifi credentials, it was the swap of the Dual receiver for an A&R A60 that was my intro to real hifi. Many years, and many swaps and trade ins later I still only have a modest system, but it sounds good to me.

Arcam CD73T, Beresford bushmaster MkII DAC, Naim NAC62, NAP150x, Dynaudio Excite X12 or Epos ES14 speakers.

When I was 13 I got an Arcam Alpha 8 amp, a year or so later I got the Alpha 7 CDP. I used little Gale speakers then when I was 18 I got B&W 602 S2, I ised that system for many years, still use the speakers in my main system at 31, well overdue an upgrade!

My first hifi was a Onkyo with a 4 disc turntable and matching speakers which i later turned into my own by making the holes bigger, i can't remember the make but that was my first system which i would listen in my bedroom.
