Dear Sir, I want to buy a 46 inch to 50 inch Full HD TV to be connected to my 7.1 home theater comprising of Onkyo 608, Acoustic Energy Aelite Series speakers and Onkyo Blu Ray. I paid a visit to Sony, Samsung and LG shoppe's where they were strictly of the opinion of buying an LCD or LED-LCD TV. Than I visited Panasonic Shopp and I was impressed to meet a very technically updated sales person who did spend a very valuable time with me explaining me the difference between the two technologies and its plus/minuses. After knowing every small detail from me regarding my choice and usage he has strictly recommended Plasma for my use. After a very detailed look at the different aspects I am highly impressed with it.

The confusion is that the senior guy from Sony was openly stating that Plasma is now an outdated technology and does not hold any future...LCD is the future...and bcoz of the same Sony has stopped making Plasma's ? If that is so...how come company like Panasonic is continuing ? Aspects like Black Level, Viewing angle, Natural Colour reproduction, Almost real time motion, 3 yrs Warranty and SD card slot are very impressive and high on "value for money".

What Hifi, being a very reputed and neutral body, kindly guide me based which I will proceed ahead buying one....

Regards

PDJ

Both plasma and LCD are very much viable technologies: I would ignore the hype from the sales people, and choose the TV with the picture you think is best.

All that is sales hype. Sony stopped making plasmas mainly because you can make LCD TVs from 14-inch till 60-inch (currently) with a single technology (LCD). So you save a lot on manufacturing. You cannot make smaller plasma TVs & having a separate manufacturing plant for plasmas aiming at a smaller market for large TVs may not make economic sense for Sony. The best TV ever to be made was a Pioneer Kuro which was a plasma (they stopped making TVs last year because they couldn't survive making just 50 & 60-inch TVs in economic recession). It's yet to be convincingly beaten.

As Andrew said, just buy which TV you think is offering the best picture quality.

THANK YOU BIG BOSS,

FOR YOUR VERY CONVINCING REPLY....

I BELIEVE NO ONE IN THE MARKET IS REALLY AWARE OF THE STORY BEHIND....I WILL SETTLE BUYING PANASONIC PLASMA....YOUR REFERENCE TO KURO WAS INDEED A BIG SURPRISE FOR US AS PIONEER DID NEVER GET ACTIVE IN INDIA...I HAVE READ SOMEWHERE THAT PANASONIC HAS TAKEN OVER PIONEER AND SANYO....I HOPE IF THIS IS TRUE THAN THEY SHOULD INCORPORATE THOSE GREAT QUALITIES IN THEIR OWN PANELS....

Panasonic has not taken over Pioneer, but they bought a substantial amount of their TV patents and hired some of their previous engineers.

Many reviewers agree that you can already this year spot some of the Pioneer technology in the Panasonic plasmas.
You shouldn't think it is relabelled Pioneer sets, as Panasonic naturally also wish to maintain and evolve their own technology, so it is a mix.

But get Panasonic plasma. I promise you will not regret it
