Hey guys looking for a bit of advice on which sub to get.

My options are : MA AW12 , Bk 400 or the BK monolith.

Mainly used for movies and games.

My set up is Denon 2310 with Montior Audio R270hd as Fronts, R225hd for the centre and R90hd for the rears. The room is big and open plan so I'm worried that the sub will sound weak. Anyone using a sub in a open plan room?

Thanks for all your help

I have the AW-12 & it's awesome! It'll be more than capable for your open plan room (how big is your room?). I have heard the AW-12 with your speaker setup (although I went for R225HD instead of R270HD), & it's excellent.

The AW-12 will also match your Radius HD speakers looks wise.

BK subs are well respected & the Monolith is a beast of a subwoofer. But you'll struggle to get an audition.

Looked at the specs, the AW-12 has the same specs as the RSW12 doesnt it?

I could be wrong as no pro, but same speaker and voice coil and same amp 500rms and 1000peak

I think bigboss has tried both though and he has said before that the newer sub is better (unless I'm imagining that!). However, for the difference in current price....

Yes, the specs are similar on paper, but the AW-12 performs better.

As quoted by Monitor Audio:

"Monitor Audio has created a wholly new sub-bass engine for the AW-12,
designed to contribute a seismic blend of deep bass frequencies and high
output with low distortion. Every component has been developed
specifically for the AW-12, including the massively engineered
front-firing 12" C-CAM© driver and 500 watt Class D amplifier. The
amplifier and its complementary high efficiency switch mode power supply
are able to deliver full power with a continuous rating, equal to most
other subwoofers rated at 1000 watts. This means that even in the
largest rooms, the AW-12 is able to perform cleanly, dynamically and
with profound effect over extended periods of listening."

The choice was easier for me, because the cost difference between the AW-12 & the RSW12 was only £50 last year, but now the difference is around £500. For performance per pound, the RSW12 offers a better value, but if you take the cost out of the equation completely, then the AW-12 wins.

Thanks guys for your help. The room is 4.40 metres wide, 6.70m in length and the ceilings are about 3m high. half the room is a study and the other half is used for watching films and such.

I'm leaning towards the AW 12 simply for the fact that BK customer care is useless. I have emailed them 3 times asking about delivery to Ireland and not once have they replied. I'v tried calling and the phone either rings out or is engaged. I'll try again. In the mean time can someone tell me if they do deliver to Ireland??? I'm interested in the 500 watt of the monolith but of course they havnt got back to me with a price on it. In fact I'll send them another email now (4th email)

I'm waiting on a quote for a AW-12 so if the price is right that might be the one to get.

BigBoss with your experience with the AW12 how is it with movies. what interest me with the monolith is its ability to go low. How does the AW12 do in this department ?

Again thanks for your help

For the price difference I would go for the RSW12 as per the specs, like big boss said, not really worth double the price, as you could buy 2 RSW12's and that would rock the foundations.

I was in the same place as you..... HAD ENOUGH OF BK they are usless.

BK might have amazing sub's, but I belive in excellent customer service as well, and if you had to return one It would be a nightmare.

I emailed them as well and nothing, even said I wanted to buy 2, what a joke.

I called SMC custom installs yesterday and not only did they give me a RSW12 for 380.00 they threw in a handmade Audioquest 5m cable for free, and they are not cheap from what I seen online.

I only use my RSW12 for movies and it goes down to 21hz - just like the AW12. It does a brilliant job.

I am glad you talk so highly of the RSW12 makes me want mine yesterday, I cant wait until Thursday.

When you use words like astonishing, makes me feel like my own sub is not worthy but yet that can shake the windows when it wants, like in star trek

After sending BK a email last night stating the fact i havnt heard back from them at 8.45 this morning they called. The lady was very nice and very apologetic. The 500 watt upgraded version is an extra £92 but delivery to Ireland is quite expensive at £100 (I do suppose they weigh a ton)

I'm waiting to hear back form Richersounds in belfast to see if they have any open box AW 12 or RSW 12.

Ummmmm beauty (aw 12) or the beast (500 watt monolith)

The monolith is a coffee table!!! , if I had the space and no neighbours and they emailed me back I would have bought one.

I would never use that to the full as it would shake the house, and not good when you live in a semi.

Richersounds got back to me. £499 for a display model. So it's between the 500 Watt monolith £700 Brand New OR The AW 12 £499 Display Model.

If it were my money I would buy the AW12.

Its almost half the price, you get it now, good service at richer sounds, and full 3 year warranty with monitor audio.

I cant imagine the monolith being so so much more powerful. plus what happens if something goes wrong, do you trust BK?

plus 100.00 just for delivery, thats a rip off.

Yes, the Monolith goes really low at 15Hz, while the AW-12 goes down till 21Hz. Having said that, the AW-12 has more than enough "oomph" to wow you every time you watch a movie.

Personally, I'll prefer a product with a solid customer support, especially since you live in Ireland. Phone lines going engaged & no reply to repeated emails doesn't sound promising to me.
