I have been wondering what everyone tends to do with their listening modes for movies. If your dvd is in dts or dolby 5.1, whats the point of THX?? or does anyone change the listening mode away from whats shwon on your dvd cover?

Hey Gander,

THX is not a listening mode, it is a set of specifications. So, if your receiver is THX certified, it means the manufacturer has sent if off to THX to evaluate and if it meets their requirements it will get a THX rating. Hence why there are different levels of THX, such as Ultra 2 etc when you go higher end (however don't assume because a product is not THX certified that it is no good, THX certification costs a lot of money, many smaller manufacturers won't bother even though their kit may be well in excess of the THX spec).

Generally if you're watching a DVD, choose the best quality soundtrack on the disc. DTS if the disc has it, otherwise just plain old Dolby Digital.

Gander:noted, but the onk does have thx cinema and game mode.

THX mode does do some processing, most noticeably re-equalisation to remove some of the brightness of some soundtracks .

so does that mean that the processing / fundamental listening mode will still be dts or dolby digital and the THX will make a slight difference to the overall brightness??

Thanks

Yeh and a damn useful mode it is too when you have 9 mordaunt short tweeters in your set-up like myself, it could get a bit hairy sometimes without it.
