So what's the best pair of speakers you have ever owned? It can be a pair you once owned or it can be the pair you own now. For me it is the PSB Imagine B bookshelf speakers I own now. I paid 900 quid for them brand new and to my eyes they are the most gorgeous pair of speakers I have ever owned, my pair are in a dark cherry wood finish. They also sound stunning with rich detailed sound and plenty of bass that never sounds over powering. Much Better sounding than the B&W CM5 speakers I owned before.

Had a pair of Epos ES14 for 20 years. They are a bit battered and weary, one has been repaired by Creek, but would not sell them for the world. Sat on the end of my Naim kit, they just sound fabulous.

KEF LS50. Amazing clarity, sound natural, wide soundstage and places instruments and vocals well. I was surprised by the amount and clarity of the lower end too. Fast, fluid and the sound is utterly seamless. Voices sound so natural on these.

As with a previous thread (I think it was: what's the best system you've ever owned?) most people will say it's the speakers they currently own. After all, people generally trade up, not down. (OK, I know there are exceptions, e.g. one might move to a lesser speaker because of a change in circumstances or system synergy But still ...)

What I'm getting at is that it'd be more interesting to ask: what's the best pair of speakers you've ever heard?

Anyway, my vote goes to my current main speakers: Martin Logan Montis.

Having listened to a wide range of traditional cone speakers (including actives), I think that electrostatics sound more accurate and realistic.

For me its the speakers I have now without a doubt. They cost me all of £70. Much more 'musical' than the Kef ref model 2 speakers I had before them. As has been said before about these old Goodmans they are an open window into my music. I love them!

I would like to say QAcoustics 2020i, but that would be wrong on more than one level

current AE 109's, not exactly neutral , and are getting on a bit, but seems put musical performance ahead of sounding technically 'right',

Hmmm, for larger rooms, the Mission 752s, a lot of love for Mission's 751 too.

My current Dynaudio DM2/6s, and by a country mile, because they always place the focus on the music instead of the hi-fi. Wonderful speakers.

I only once heard the 'audiance' small bookshelve model, the treble and stereo focus still sticks in my mind, it was very very good .

Been away from the forum a while and come back to see you have the little PM6005 , is it good enough for the dynaudios,

i am thinking of changing the AS500 which can sound 'hashy' with rougher stuff,

i would assume the marantz is far from hashy

Overall best: EV Patrician 800's.

That is quite a speaker........ 8)

I used to have a customer with a castle (actually a fortified 'manse', which is pretty close) in Scotland, they would suit his room perfectly.

I must admit I was dubious about whether the PM6005 would be good enough, particularly as I've previously heard Dyns with a PM6003 and not been wholly taken. However, I bought the 6005 about 4 weeks ago and I've not stopped listening in that time which pretty much says it all to me. I've still got the Exposure 1010 in its box, but the fact that I haven't once been tempted back to it, tells me everything else I might need to know.

The 6005 has re-ignited my passion for the music and led to severe waning of my interest in hi-fi. I'm not contributing here anywhere near as much, and mostly in the music section, but even more significant I'm not reading the vast majority of threads either.

Now I come to think about it hasn't someone already asked the question what's the best pair of speakers you've ever heard?

Yes, you're probably right.

In my case the answer to both questions would be the same.

The best pair I’ve had is my currant Mordaunt-Short Aviano 6 partnered with the capable A-S500, there’s a wonderful synergy between these 2 components that’s very musical and satisfying.

Mac,

I thought you might be tempted!

I just hope the experience doesn't make you desperate to buy a certain shiny French amp ...

Cheers,

Matt

I'd probably struggle to get another chance to hear the +, so had to take it and with regards the Dev, I'll just have to be strong!

Event Opal were no doubt the "best". But on my current speakers I enjoy music far more because they're more suitable for my room ... + imaging & neutrality is better than on the Opals.

Up until a few weeks back this would have been my shortlist:

Magnepan MMG

Rega R7

KEF 104/2

But since finding a pair of Rega R9s, then that would be my current choice! Even more scale and depth than the R7s, that just about match the 104/2s but tighter/faster. Not as open and transparent as the Maggies but then more forgiving of bad recordings and generally a better all round speaker, even with modest amplification like the Bryston B60.

Honorable mention would go to the DIY Active Horn speakers I made, probably getting towards the best but never really got them optomised 100%. If it was for a small room then it would be a toss up between the ATC SCM10, SCM7 and Harbeth P3ES depending on bass depth/SPL needs.
