New to this site but not to hi-fi, since I assembled my first setup in the 1970s. It's disappointing but amusing to find TV and, god help us, "home cinema " regarded as being included in hi-fi...
I ditched my TV licence years ago since most output is rubbish and I have better things to do; we have an old small TV for watching DVDs.
The latest "awards" thing here actually lists TVs in front of turntables! Good grief. If this reflects popular taste, it's depressing.

AV presumably includes film: I've been a cinema enthusiast all my life, served on the committees of three film societies. I watch the occasional film on DVD, though I don't feel the need for anything called "home cinema". Isn't there a "What TV" site or magazine for telly fans?

Telly is so last century...

I don't view my television via terrestrial digital antenna anymore, I don't even have a TV licence because it's mostly utter garbage.
It's all streaming and internet, a much better alternative to what is on offer but that's just my humble opinion.

Visual HiFi I like to call it because the TV is part of the component that contributes to the overall visual and sound experience.
Audio HiFi is the above without the distraction 😊

It’s because of WhatHiFi that I am into AV and was buying home cinema packages and TVs because of the mag long before this website forum. They got me hooked on it thanks to their reviews.

I ditched my TV licence years ago for the same "garbage" reason. I don't have time (other things to do) for watching DVDs more than occasionally, let alone streaming + Internet. And I spend half the year in France: our house doesn't have broadband, and any sort of streaming uses far too much data via the mobile signal.

We get great value from the Beeb via iPlayer.

In terms of image quality, TV is very much 21st century. 4k/HDR is such an improvement over HD, and at the turn of the century most of us were probably still making do with SDR. Streaming is a great addition, but in terms of readily-appreciable improvements, video has kicked audio's ass since 2000.
I ditched my licence so cannot use iPlayer even if I wanted to. My jest about "last century" had nothing to with technology: as a retired pro photographer/writer I transitioned successfully from film to digital so I'm acquainted with that sort of thing.
My interest in hi-fi has been revived, whether or not its ass has been kicked by video - my acquaintance with the latter is solely via occasional DVDs, and the surprisingly high quality I get from the GoPros I use to record my fishing. I don't stream video.

@Sanglier, I have no interest in home cinema and care little for film and TV so, we just use Freesat (we have a free TV licence). However, a lot of people are enthusiastic about home cinema. Diversifying widens the appeal of the website, keeps advertisers happy and increases the likelihood of Future keeping the main site and the forum open.

I have no interest in vinyl but, I don't bemoan the presence of turntable and phono stage reviews on the site.

You mention photography, that's my other love and building my own PCs for self, friends and relatives.
GoPros nice camera on the go. Sounds like a lot of fun. Tiny little thing with amazing quality!

I have Nikon 6-II mirrorless, not the greatest but certainly one of the better cameras in it's price range. The 4K videos are absolutely gorgeous on my LG 4K Oled TV. The draw back is me lumbering around my prime lenses plus one zoom, you do it for the love! 🙂

I take your point, though turntables very much come under the heading of hi-fi. Re diversifying, if I bought a magazine called "What Cat" I would not expect it to cover dogs.

I shot the built environment (editorial domestic interiors the most important field) on Mamiya & Fuji MF SLRs plus a Cambo Wide with Horseman backs; subsequently I shot everything digitally on Canon DSLRs plus (later on) the wonderful little Fuji X-Pro2. The latter is the only camera I've kept, and take few photos now...

Wrong Forum sir.... 🙂
I know, hear me out 😊
I was alluding to; using camera for home entertainment.

Also, some of the new gen cameras have Dolby codecs built in, and quality sound recordings on those.

But yes, let's stick to apples and leave the oranges in another basket 😉
