I can't decide what Headphones to buy to partner my Graham Slee Solo. Beyer Dynamiv DT 880 or Sennheiser HD 650? Any thoughts?

You were asking earlier for recommendations for a headphone amp (Pro-Ject Headbox II or Creek OBH-11). And you have a Solo?!! Very **confused**

Simple, the other Headphone Amp is for another system.Since my last post someone suggested a Graham Slee Novo.

The Sennheiser 650`s are great sounding headphones and they have a reputation for sounding particulary good when paired with Graham Slee amps.

Thank you for your post , I'll now seek out a pair of 650's.Where is the best place to buy from?

Not so long ago you could have picked them up for around £250 from Amazon (if you were looking for best price) but they are now £285 which is about the price most companies are looking for. For another fiver (£291) I can recommend www.harrowaudiohifi.co.uk with free delivery. I have used this shop several times through the years and have always been impressed with their knowledge and service.

Wherever you buy them from I hope you enjoy them!

Thanks again. I ordered mine yesterday from Audio Affair and I just received them today, excellent service.

Good morning every one, I need advice, have sennheiser HD280 headphones. with my 60birthday just weeks away children asked about a present. always liked the idea of a headphone amp. Amp is Arcam av50,do you think headphones are up to it or are they wasting there money can't afford to change anything. thanks.ps really enjoy reading all the post

You would have been better off starting a new thread, your request might get missed here.

Headphone amplifiers are a highly subjective issue. There are people who say that they are a must and they make a noticable difference others including myself believe if you have a good Hi-Fi amplifier they are not necessary. This is based on listening to both and ending in selling my headphone amplifiers.

Most amplifier's headphone sockets are driven via dropper resistor from the main power amplifier on integrated amps. People are now going to chime in and say you get a impedance mismatch etc this is not true impedance matching only matters when you need maximum power transfer. Most Arcam amplifiers I have used/repaired have had extremely good headphone outputs although I am not familiar with your amplifier I can't imagine it would be any different.

So my advice would be no it is not necessary and you would not see an improvement in sound quality, it may sound different as all amplifiers do but if you brought the Arcam I would guess you like the sound of it.

thanks for your reply eggontoast ,would have started a new thread if i knew how.all this is new to me but thanks anyway.

I think that a headphone amp is only worth it if you have particularly hard to drive headphones, you listen to headphones a lot or you find your amp sounds terrible with your headphones. I would suggest the main test is background hiss. If you are getting a lot at low volumes, there will be a loss of clarity, but if you do not get hiss until the volume is at such a point it will be too loud, then you will be fine.
