[🙁] Bought a Rega white belt for my P2 and a P3's glass platter. Wore gloves (surgical ones) and replaced belt and platter, nothing else. Now when I play any LP there is an obvious speed up slow down during various parts of the records??????? Why??????

Is the belt 'riding' up the sub-platter? (It should stay level with the pulley about halfway up the sub-platter without riding up or down.)

Does the belt have a shaped profile/cross section that means it has to be used a particular way round or is it the usual o' ring?

It should stay level with the pulley a few millimetres down from the bottom of the glass. (It should stay at that level and not foul on the glass platter.)

Yes, standard profile "O" ring.

Sitting level with 33rpm pulley about 3-5mm below platter.

Surely a new belt wouldnt require "break in?"

Quite the opposite. A new belt is always better than an old one.

What happens if you keep the white belt in place and put the original P2 platter back?

Think I will whip it down our local emporium in the morning see if they can do an RPM check.

May look / listen to it through a stageline whilst am there, never know, could get a free service out of it!

I hope you are still giving the platter the 'assisted start' before switching on. Even more important now you are using the heavier platter.

Yes, its now part of my ritual for spinning LP's.

1. Assisted start

2. Clean Stylus

3. De static disc with brush

4. Listen and enjoy

True Blue:May even stretch the VISA to the limit (prior to VAT rise) and go for a P5.............

Just remember to put any cartridges worth less than a £3.5K Dynavector under the nearest steamroller 🙂 (Goldring first, then Exact. You know the order)

True Blue:C'mon give me a break, recommendations please

I was joshing about some the suggestions that were beaten down the other day as 'harsh nasty nails'.

I recommended the Exact and the Goldring 1042 (from having heard one and used the other).

I also think the 2M Black could be amazing from what I have read of it but I have not heard it.

Forgot about that "other" conversation LOL, unless a remortgage is required nothing is going to satisfy those people.

Hopefully its something simple and can be sorted cheaply. Wouldnt mind listening to it through the stageline though. One less interconnect and one less power supply 🙂

I use the 2M red and love it to bits

Indeed, thanks.

Difficult to dem cartridges really. Love the Blue, if I could get this speed thing sorted out, its like certain notes (piano especially) have huge amounts of reverb on them. I am picking up on it which is not good.

Think I would skip the bronze if I upgraded and go straight for the Black.

Whether or not that happens tomorrow with the P5 is dependant on the reason of my speed variation and whether I can manage to get a good "before the VAT" deal ;-)

PS dont tell the wife. I will just say its been serviced!! (IF I fail to stay objective)

I had a similar speed change problem with my P2 & I think it was Chebby who steered me in the direction of checking if the pulley was loose on the spindle and using a bit of super glue

As it stands took my TT down to Audio T and they reset the tracking force checked a few things out, then changed the "new" white belt for one of their dem ones............

Everything was better. They spoke to Rega and a new white belt is on its way down for them to fit, and the one which is defective is being returned for inspection as well as my receipt for it from the firm who shall remain nameless who claim to be Rega dealers and are in fact not.

Great service from Rega and my dealer. Head hung in shame for not buying from them in the first place. Still I did buy a Naim Stageline N whilst I was in 🙂

P2 glass platter is 10mm, P3 is 12mm you either need to adjust the height of the arm by using a 2mm washer or get a P2 glass platter, although Rega say height adjustment is not so critical i feel that a turntable should not not be altered to much as the designers at Rega know what there doing. I used a Denon DL 110 on my P2 with excellent results.
