My last two telly's have been Ambilight and it's one of the reasons I'd always include Philips when considering a new one.

For the first week or two you (or more likely your misses) may find it a little distracting but rather than an irritation it's more a case of "Oooo look, the pretty colours on the wall...

...and they're the same as what's on the box!". As long as you haven't got it cranked up to 'Disco' then it very quickly just becomes part of a generally more relaxed visual experience, indeed giving a hitherto absent ambience to your room.

After a short while (if you leave it on permanently) you almost won't notice it until some airhead - sorry Dear - presses the wrong button on the remote and all of a sudden it's like someone's turned the lights out - which I know they have but you know what I mean.

As you can tell I'm a fan

I love the ambilight feature of my PFL-479664. To get the most out of this effect it is best to wall mount the screen though. Here's how mine looks on Sky News HD now. This picture was just snapped off my phone so the quality isn't great. Gives you an idea of how it looks though

I think its nothing short of brilliant. Like the OP said if someone turns it off when yo'ure watching you notice it big time. You feel almost detatched from the picture. It really draws you into the screen. It also significantly reduces eye strain when you watch in the dark. Once you've had a TV with it I doubt you'd buy another without.

I love the way the colours fade in and out slowly but always match the screen. Its also great sitting watching a Blu-Ray in the pitch black with the colours lighting the room the room up whilst the home cinema is whirliing the sound around the room, it really adds to the atmosphere.

Love it,

just bought the new 46PFL9705, brilliant tv.

I don't know anything about the new 58 inch 21:9 (I think its overpriced), but I am delighted with my new 9000.

It's enough to have kept me from buying a new TV for a year... as the two things I really wanted was a HD Freeview tuner and Ambilight.

Have to hope when Philips actually produce a TV with this combination they still have an excellent picture, mind...

Used to love it in the good old days of about 4 years ago, these days there is not that much there of it.

I own the Philips PFL 9604 TV. Brilliant picture, brilliant sound. I never use the ambilight function though, I hate it
