Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about getting some decent headphones, and i was wondering if anyone knew what the best headphones were for dance / house music, i've been looking at Beats by Dre (Studio), after a recommendation from a friend.

Any one have any advice.

Cheers

Well, I think Grados are excellent with any type of music. I'd recommend the SR80is as a first pair. But beware - they are open backed.

Depends on a lot of things and if you can you are best to listen first if you can. I have some Pioneer DJ2000 ( i think that is the model ) and they are the best sets of headphones I have had - I must be on my tenth set if not more. I use them to monitor on though and although they have plenty of bass with a nice tight sound they may get a bit tiring after a few hours.

It really depends on how you listen - in the street, at home, 15 mins, 2 hours etc. Try to get into a decent shop and listen.

You can do as well as the Beats for much less money. I would recommend the Denon AH D1001 which can be found for £100. They do bass and retain details that the Beats can't. The Beats mean you paying a premium for image.

I have some SR80i's and it took a while for them to bed in, but listening to the Invaders Must Die album is quite something special with them, yes they leak sound like a sock with a hole in it, but i don't care as I'm enjoying every last second of the music i listen to, solid bass and tons of detail.

I'd definitely want a decent source and a headphone amp if I bought the 352is

I think you'd be better off spending that kind of money on something like the 80is and some amplification.

What are you using as a source?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but i know nothing about hi fi, i just fancy spending a few quid on a decent set of headphones for my ipod, obviously i try to rip my music in loss less format, but i know nothing about anything else, people may find it funny that i'm looking at the Grados.

I wouldn't mind a decent hifi set up but my house isn't big enough, so i thought i'd get some quality headphones

Hi Mickgw,

I own 2 sennheiser headphones and one klipsch in ear. Personally I find the ipod -I own the nano- and the klipsch X-10 in ears the perfect match. You should keep in mind though that personal preference comes into play. I just like the clean, natural sound this combo gives me.

Hope this helps

Nothing wrong with looking at the Grados. I've read comments that the 80is sound pretty good with iPods, but the problem is even then you won't be getting anywhere near the performance intended from the headphones. For this reason I think it'd be a waste getting the 325is unless you were planning to invest in a headphone amp or use them from a decent headphone out in a CDP or amp.

You could also use a portable headphone amp like a Fiio to try to make sure that the headphones are driven better from the iPod, but this would still be underutilizing the potential of the headphones.

A solution many on these forums seem to have used is the Firestone Audio FUBAR IV which is a combined DAC and headphone amp. You can then either give it a digital feed from your PC or from an iPod using a digital transport such as the Onkyo ND-S1, which yields great results, and blows away the sound you'd get by connecting the headphones straight to the iPod or even using a portable headphone amp as it combines decent amplification with a superior DAC to the one used in an iPod.
