Virgin V+ and 5.1 sound.

I've asked before, but still haven't resolved this issue. I have set up my V+ box with hdmi for picture. As the box wont do anything but stereo through the hdmi, my Onkyo 606 is set up to receive sound via optical cable from V+.

So, I should be set up for best picture and best sound, hdmi and optical respectively.

(One issue: changing my Onkyo's audio set up for the "cable" input from hdmi to optical DID NOT work via remote control. The on screen display showed the change, but the hdmi still did the job and despite the unit saying I had made the switch. The Onkyo only worked when I did the same thing via the buttons on the unit itself. I did exactly as I had via remote, but it worked. I have since unplugged and done it again, and it just WONT take the setting unless I use the buttons on the box. Anyone else had this problem?!!)

Right, back to my 5.1 issue.
Despite my set up my Onkyo NEVER recognises a 5.1 Dolby input when using the V+. I have watched BBC HD, accross a variety of programs, e.g. Jools Holland. Either my set up is wrong, or there is no 5.1 coming out of my box ever.

Can someone help, please!

Cheers.

(guess I should try the default audio set up via the box buttons, not the remote?)

Hi SAP7

Go to the main menu on the V+ box

Select No.8/Settings

Select No.6/Tech Stuff

Select No.4/Change display and audio settings

Then switch HDMI audio override to ON.

This will pass the 5.1 signal via the optical output, rather than the HDMI, and you should get full surround sound.

Try watching Apparitions now on BBC HD. I'm definitely getting Dolby Digital 5.1 on my Yamaha DSP-AX863SE.

Well,

Thanks. There's always something you miss, and that's why this place is invaluable! Cheers
Andy.

Auto override is now set to "on". It was on "off".
Just waiting for something other than Hotel Babylon to come on! Patience is a virtue... but here's hoping it works!

(ps, miss out the select No 6 bit, it is just 8 and then 4).

Whilst you are waiting for a better programme on BBC HD you could always try some of the HD stuff 'On Demand'. If memory serves me correctly Planet Earth has a Dolby soundtrack with it but I am not 100% percent on this but as you are waiting......

Andy,

I have the exact same set up as you but for the life of me cannot get 5.1 sound. Rather oddly I get sound and the Yamaha even says its DTS or DD but it only plays through the L and R speakers - I cannot get it to recognise any of the other ones. Any ideas?
Cheers

I also have an 863 and V+. If you set the amp to Pro Logic (press Surr decoder) you will get 5.1 sound from most TV programs.

Thanks, but still no joy for me. I have my optical cable going into DTV/CBL which is where it's supposed to go according to the manual. How about you? I have heard that Virgin do not actually transmit any channels in 5.1 even though their website says they do - the only exception being BBC HD. However even that gives me no joy.

When I watch BBC HD my amp automatically selects Dolby Digital. When I watch normal TV I set it to Pro Logic. I get 5.1 sound from both. I have my optical cable going to the same connections as you.

Looks like I should be getting it, but still no joy and it makes no difference what channel I watch. I may try rebooting the box to see if that does anything. Do you definitely get all six speakers appearing in the display? I just get L and R.

No, my display only shows L & R like yours but sound does come from all 6 speakers.
