Sounds remarkably like a good active system to me....... :?

A good system, is a good system....whether Assive or Pactive!

Agree entirely.

However in the context of mathews restricted budget (he has no money because he spends it all on old hi-fi junk.......) it is, in my experience, much easier and less expensive to get beyond the unsatisfying sound of most budget systems by going active rather than by simply buying better passive components.

This is not to suggest that active systems are better than passive systems in all respects but simply an observation that, whatever faults the active system does have, it is not the same fault that passive systems have at the budget level.

I've been down the road of the '70s vintage gear and was never totally satisfied with the sound. But to save money I've been completely satisfied with the sound of gear from the '90s. Seems like there is plenty of good amp and cdp design from the '90s and forward. My 2¢
