I have recently bought a Sony HXD995 DVD recorder and have now set it up. The other equipment in the chain in an old Panasonic VHS recorder and Sony TV (I'm at work at the moment so not sure of the model but about 8 yrs old) and the Sky digibox. I have some VHS tapes that I wish to xfer to DVD-r.

I was told by a work colleague that this process would do the trick:-

1. Just before going off to bed, set the VHS tape playing and the DVD recording (to capture the output from the tape onto the hard disk).

2. Next day edit the recording on the hard disk as reqd. - i.e. remove excess footage, add chapters, menus etc..

3. When happy, x-fer the edited recording to a DVD-r.

4. Delete the recording from the hard disc.

I have yet to try this out (perhaps this weekend ?) but have a few questions... a). Say the pgm on the vhs tape was 2 hrs long - is there any way I can have the Sony HXD995 shut off automatically after the tape has finished playing and there is no more footage to capture ? b) If this is not possible, what does the DVD record after the tape has finished running ? Also assuming I do this for say 40 or 50 tapes, does this repeated recording of nothing(?) onto the HDD cause it any harm ? c) To capture the output from the VHS, what channel should the Sony HXD995 be set to - or does it matter ? Sorry if these sound very elementary - but I am very new to this game. Cheers, Brian
