Is it ok to buy a projector in US and bring it over for use in UK? Are there any hidden "switchings" one should be aware of which might make it not worth the hassle? many thanks PL

You'll need to check it can handle PAL TV broadcasts (the UK broadcasting system) as well as NTSC (the American broadcasting system), if you intend to watch TV through it over here.

You may also need a step-down transformer due to the differnces between voltages on our electristy supplys on either side of the pond.
