Upgrading my system

Hi everybody,

I need some advices from you, Home Cinema enthusiasts:

I currently own a (very) low-class system composed of a yamaha RX-800 receiver + Bose acoustimass 10 speakers (I know, I know, I was young and stupid).
I'd like to upgrade my system, and my budget is around 1000-1200 GBP.

The intent is to buy a piece of equipment I would keep for quite a fair bit of time.
I was looking at buying an Onkyo 3007 receiver (last year's high range model, now at a bargain) after having read very good reviews.

OR I could go with new speakers (like B&W 685 5.1)
The problem is I feel these speakers are good mid-class speakers, but not "high-class" speakers.
And I don't really want to spend 1200 GBP now then buy new speakers in 2 years after having spared some more money.

So question: Will the Onkyo 3007 make a big improvement in sound coupled with my bad Bose Acoustimass speakers?
Or B&W 685 speakers coupled with my Yamaha receiver now (and the onkyo later) will sound so good I won't want to change them after 3 years?

Many thanks,

Jon

Providing that your Yamaha is still going strong, I think you will notice the biggest improvement if you upgrade your speakers.

If you read this months Big Question, you will see how no improvement in amplification can overcome the sound of a poor speaker system.

Don't just set your heart on the B&W 685's,audition several packages until you like what you hear.

Thanks for your reply,

Any suggestion as to which speakers brand I should audition? In order not to sound to bright on my yamaha, and which will sound good on a future onkyo amp?

At the risk of being - - - - - you might consider this under the "hot deal" thread

Clearance BR range at Frank Harvey 299.00 for BR5 with chord carnival

Not withstanding your other choice being B&W might be worth audition as well , as identified I would have thought the Bose was the weak link in your system
