Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum and would like some advice please.

I have a Sony system (about 10 years old) running through Acoustic Energy Evo speakers.

I'm looking to keep the speakers but buy a separate amd and CD player.

Considering Marantz 6003 amd and CD player, but I am interested in the Arcam solo mini.

Your advice is much appreciated as we have very few hi fi shops over here in Guernsey!!

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the forum.

For best advice and auditioning you should travel and find a good HiFi Dealer. This will allow you to see and hear different kit in your price bracket as well as getting really good advice. Alternatively you could buy blind from internet sites and hope the system is to your liking.

I think the Marantz amp will do fine. Marantz have been producing fine amps across the price spectrum way back to the mid 80's. I've had two go through my system and they have performed superbly. So there's the Marantz plug and recommendation. I do not feel the same way about their CD players, as generally they have always been too mild for my taste. As above, go to a good dealer, use the amp as a starting point, and swap a few players around and 'hear' for yourself.

The Marantz 6003s out-perform the Solo Mini. The Marantz pairing is excellent though I would also suggest trying the CD6003 with the Rotel RA-04SE (which is a good step up from the PM6003) and the new Yamaha A-S500 (which I haven't heard but I've read very good things about).

The little Arcam unit is very good but it doesn't quite compete with equivalently priced seperates in my experience.
