upgrade to virgin v+ or an alternative?

The missus wants to upgrade to v+ so she can pause/rewind live TV and record channels whilst watching others. This all sounds great but I do not want to be paying an extra monthly fee or an exorbitant installation fee, so, is there another way to achieve the same aim?

I have looked at PVR's but do not know whether they will connect in to my virgin set top box and do the same job. Also, I believe I will not receive Freeview when my transmitter goes digital next year. I know I cannot receive Freeview at the moment so my thinking is that a PVR will be useless to me. Is that right?

no connecting your virgin box to a stand alone pvr wont allow you to pause/rewind or record one channel whilst watching another etc, you either need to upgrade to v+ or go for an alternative such as sky+ or the new freesat pvr
