Hey, I'm new to the forums.

Tried searching for this but found no threads related to this.

At the moment I'm running a Cambridge Audio A5 amp (bought in 2009) and Tannoy Mercury F4 Customs (Bi - wired). I'm looking to upgrade the amp as i've got the urge to do it. I'm just wondering which amplifier would be best to upgrade to without killing the wallet. I'm looking to spend about £550ish. I listen to a variety of music so need something thats going to handle all ranges fairly well. And the 360 also runs through it for gaming sound.

Cheers

Ben

vinod_david:The CA 840 v1 for around 399 at RS will not hurt your wallet, IMO. Yes, a huge upgrade from your A5. 🙂

This is exactly the upgrade I followed (I'm a loyal customer of RS's

) and couldn't have been any happier. The A5 is a decent entry amp but the 840A v1 is just in a different league altogether and for for less than 400notes it's a steal. I'm currently selling mine cos it's now redundant having moved over to a full digital 'mini system' with the S5 but I had some great listening sessions with that amp. And I didn't find it lacking of bass at all (once it's been run hard for 2-3 weeks) - was connected to some Monitor Audio standmounters.

cheers guys, I do like richer sounds, they are most helpful. might go and have a listen to an 840. Also what are the main differences between the 740 and 840?

You are absolutely right in wanting to get rid of your amp - it IS rubbish. The A1, A1Mk2, A1Mk3 Special Edition, A5 are all the worst amps that you can possibly buy. Totally useless amps - probably only meant for students!
