Upgrade advice

System:

Yamaha DSP-AX630SE amp, Panasonic PT-AE100E projector, Energy Take 5.1 speakers and Sony RDRHXD870 DVD

Although I have been pleased with the picture quality of my projector I have never really managed to achieve a room-filling surround sound effect (despite tweaking settings with the aid of a sound meter). I am planning a gradual system upgrade to an HD projector but where would you suggest I start on the sound system. My room is 3m x 4m and my initial thoughts are the speakers are perhaps the weak link.

I'm inclined to agree. I'm not familiar with the speakers, but from a bit of research, they seem to be highly regarded for the price (around £200 - £300 when bought new I think), but I've seen a couple of comments about them being "great for small rooms" so, while your room isn't massive, I wouldn't call it small and given your issues with room filling sound, it certainly seems the speakers are more likely at fault than your Yamaha.

So, given all this, the ultimate questions are, what's your budget, what are you looking for most (i.e. home theatre presumably, but music in there at all?) and are you looking for a style system or are you happy to go with the more traditional speaker system?

Tho your amp is (like mine) a older Yamaha model there is nothing wrong with its ability (I know as I used to have the same model) and myfirst upgrade would definatly be your speaker package, this way when you get around to finally upgrading your amp you will allready have your speakers in place.

The order I would upgrade if you can not afford to do it all in one hit would be:

Speakers

Projector

DVD player to a Blu-Ray

finally Amp

Thanks for that Prof. I'm just looking for home theatre rather than music. I'm leaning towards traditional speakers rather than style with a budget of up to £700.

Well, there's plenty of options out there, but this Acoustic Energy Aegis Neo package looks excellent value for the money as does the Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom package. Worth seeing if you can arrange an audition.

(NB - plenty of other options out there so look for the one right for you. Also, I don't work for Superfi or necessarily recommend them, though have had good service from them in the past!).
