TV shows on Blu-Ray. A waste of money?

Just wondering what advantage there is to getting TV shows on Blu-Ray. They can't be HD can they? Or am I totally wrong?

I'm afraid you're wrong in certain instances - plenty of shows shot in HD, as there are ones shown in HD on Sky, Virgin etc.

Think Lost, Heroes, just about every BBC costume drama, tons of sci-fi....

What about older stuff? Can they HD-ify older TV shows like they can older films? Could I be watching 'Open All Hours' in HD one day?

;-)

Cool.

It's just I saw 'Supernatural' series 3 on Blu-Ray on Play. But thought it'd be pretty much the same as watching the DVD, so wasn't sure if the extra expense was justified.

It'd be nice to know which TV shows were shot in HD, and those that weren't.

I have Lost Season 4 arriving on Blu-Ray any day now so I'll let you know what it's like...

It will look amazing. It's the best produced show for picture quality that I've seen by a distance.

Shows shot on 35mm film will also look better than SD when transferred to BD, source condition allowing.

Yeah, I'm actually quite excited by this - I love Lost but haven't seen an episode since January (when I watched the entire 3rd series whilst incapacitated with Chicken Pox). Seeing it in HD is going be fantastic...

It was fantastic on Sky HD, so Bluray should take it even further (especially with the sound).

Lost is, indeed, the best-produced TV show we've seen - the detail in 1080p is just awesome. If you've ever wondered, for example, why Sawyer calls Kate "Freckles", there's no doubt after seeing her in HD!

But back to the point about older shows... As mentioned, it all depends on how they were shot. If they were captured on 35mm film with decent sound mixing - and then the film stored well and remastered for HD release - then you could be seeing classic shows on Blu-ray. If it's a video transfer then there may be more issues - where Blu-ray could come in then is in pure capacity terms: eg ability to have an entire series/several series of SD TV shows on a single disc.

I see your point there Claire but it would be difficult to market. A Bluray disc in SD! Imagine the complaints from people not getting 12 episodes of 10gb worth of 1080p on a 50gb dual layer! Most would not understand.

Yep, I was talking potential not marketing likelihood. A shame, as it'd cut shelf clutter, and with upscaling getting better all the time, as long as it was a clean transfer you'd be OK.

I've got DVD boxsets of 1960s shows (Dangerman, The Prisoner etc) that look great upscaled on an 80in display via Full HD projector...

You haven't watched any of season 4?!?!? You're in for some real head-bending, especially the final episode. I seem to recall it made me cry, it hurt my head so much!

Supernatural is shot in HD as are most US made TV Shows as on that side of the pond there is a far higher content of TV transmitted in HD but not shown in HD here because of the channel it is on.

For instance the first series of DEXTER was on ITV in SD as where sesion 2 was on FX and aired here in HD and looked soooooo much better. Just a shame that other great US shows like Entourage are on pee-poor picture quality ITV2

I totally agree, DJ Krime - I watched the first series of Heroes on SFX (which had the exclusive UK rights ahead of BBC), not knowing that instead of SD (and 4:3 broadcast!) on SFX I could have waited for HD loveliness...

I'm waiting for a feast of Dexter on Blu-ray when it comes out shortly. Meanwhile i'm getting into Fringe on Sky One HD - it's kind of Lost meets the X-Files so far!

Have only watched the first episode of Fringe so far and twas a little bit hard to follow at times, will catch up with other episodes this weekend before new episode on Sunday.

Yeah, I generally can't be bothered watching these programmes on TV as I hate having to wait a week for each episode so I wait for them to come out on DVD so I can watch them on my schedule. The only exception to this at the moment is Jericho - great show, again cancelled for no particularly good reason, especially when you see the other drivel they show.

Andy Madden:Personally, i can't wait for the Band of Brothers Blu-ray box set - complete with their DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks!!

I've pre-ordered mine for £35 on Play. A mate at work is buying my (Tin) DVD box set for a tenner too, so really it's only costing me £25!

Not bad for one of the best mini-series ever made.

BTW. Will B.O.B DTS-HD Master Audio be 5.1 or 7.1?

Well, 3 episodes into Lost Season 4 and I see it's as frustratingly addictive as always - just wondering exactly how much sleep I need tonight...!
Picture quality as others have said is very, very good. It's certainly not the best I've seen on Blu-Ray, but it's sharp, very little noise and certainly significantly better than the DVD versions of the previous series I own so well worth the upgrade in my opinion. Bearing in mind, my 42" plasma is 720p only as well. The other nice upgrade is an uncompressed PCM soundtrack - superb!
Anyway, episode 4 beckons...

My ten penneth:
Well, 'Battlestar Gallactica' S1 looks like frack on HD-DVD, so that's not a good start. Supposedly shot on HD, it's not a good advert for the format. The remastered 'Star Trek' Originals, however looks beautiful on HD-DVD, because, as Ms Newsome says they were shot on 35mm.
I watched 'Band of Brothers' in HD on Virgin and they looked pretty good, although given the amount of picture processing, desaturation and grading involved, I'm not totally sure a good upscaled DVD is THAT much worse.
Interestingly, I saw a demo of 'Thunderbirds' in 3-D (without glasses, no joke....) from a Blu Ray source in Cannes a week or two back and it looked pretty terrific. Especially if you really WANT to see the strings!
You'll never see the VT-produced 'classics' on HD (like er... 'Only Fools') because there's simply not the level of detail in the original, probably two-inch, masters. Your HD tv will do as good a job of upscaling the picture from DVD or broadcast.
