TV dilemma

Thinking of getting a new TV.

Now is the time to buy as prices are low, but we're also getting close to when 2017 models start getting announced.

My issue is that I want a good picture obviously, but whatever I buy will only be used as a screen only. It won't be connected to an aerial or satellite dish and won't have its speakers troubled by anything ever going through them. It'll only be used for watching physical media on disc.

The LG OLED TVs are a big draw, but are they so much better than a top end Samsung or Sony that they're worth the extra cash? For example they have a Samsung KS9000 65" in Currys for £2K with the cheapest 65" OLED at £2800 and the E6V another grand on top of that. Or, to put it another way, nearly double the price of the Samsung. The LGs don't appear to be awfully reliable either, having read a lot of user reviews.

Then there are the rumours that Sony are planning on releasing OLED TVs in the near future. Will these be bought in screen jobs or made by Sony themselves? Worth hanging on another few months for??

If buying for screen only, now is the right time to buy (between December and February). LG OLED TVs are excellent TVs, whether they're worth the extra premium or not, only you can know on checking them out. I was in John Lewis yesterday, and checked the LG OLED and Samsung models side by side. The Samsungs looked every bit as good side by side (obviously shop isn't the best place to compare TVs).

Sony's OLED TVs will have LG panel. For the near future, only LG will be making OLED panels. I have heard though that some Chinese manufacturers will be making OLED panels soon too (probably 2017).

I spent several weeks looking at what I could get at a reasonable price.

The Oled LG on show did not appear any better than any of the LED TVs.

For me, it was not worth the extra money.

The Sony I bought was a good price, well specced, and has a cracking picture.

I certainly don't regret buying it, nor do I think I'm missing out on anything by not having OLED.

My main issue is not having many stores to choose from where I live in which to look at them properly. I only have a Currys nearby and they have separated out the OLEDs from the rest. They have a Samsung KS9000, but it is probably 20-30 feet away from the LGs and obviously has a completely different demo vid playing. Not sure if I'm all that keen on buying from there, so don't really want to mess them about getting them to demo stuff properly side by side. My nearest JL is at Cribbs Causeway, over an hour's drive and my nearest Richer Sounds is in Bath, but it's pretty small. It does boast free parking, though, unlike the bigger Bristol store...

Any further than that and I'm virtually committing myself to a purchase just to make the trip worthwhile!

All that tells me is that the higher up the range you go the better the picture gets which only serves to put me off the lower end ones. Mind you, the nasty plastic remotes were already doing a good job of that!

Firstly, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year from Bonnie Scotland (still on holiday).

Secondly, a big thank you to BB and Gel for their advice away back in September on my purchases of my new Pioneer Receiver SC-LX89 and my LG 55 OLED ECV6 TV. The TV is out of this world with many of our friends commenting on the near 3D effect and magnificent colours from it, especially the Dolby Vision on Marco Polo in Netflix.. I have done some calibrating with the Spears & Munsil Calibration Disc, although this was when I first got the telly and I was not familiar with the LG setting controls. I just did the basic and intend now to finish the calibration as I have grasped the rest of the controls and got more info from other sources. Gel even managed to tell me about a further reduction by Selfridges on the LG and when I contacted John Lewis, they matched it. I have now got my system up and running after the better half accidently stood on the LF cable on my Velodyne Sub and broke it. It has now been repaired. The Loud & Clear guys in Glasgow set up my Receiver and TV after some glitches with the new Sky Q box and the guys were great to set it all up and even repaired my Nakamachi Cassette Deck so that I could still listen to some old tapes of BBC Radio Concerts. The sound is very good now after bedding in from October and everything hitched up perfectly (as the "boss" doesn't like haphazard wires all exposed). Just trying to convince her to get some speakers in the ceiling for the ATMOS speakers but might have to be the ones like KEF's to add to the top of my MA Gold speakers. BTW I have also an external Amp hooked up to the receiver. I have always liiked the Musical Fidelity sound from their amps and I have an A 308 Dual Mono Amp driving my front speakers and the Receiver for the Centre, Rears & Sub with no need to adjust the amp, (just put it to Aux.) as it is just plugged into the receiver. So once again, thanks guys I really appreciated your assistance in upgrading my system!!!
