I’m thinking of investing in a turntable. My current CD player is a Nad used as a transport and played into a Chord BQD dac.

This gives me a really nice high quality sound. The question is will a turntable bought on a budget of £500 match this. I have currently compared a budget entry project and the CD won hands down.

Any views before i start auditioning unnecessarily so.

regards

If you have lots of records already and want to enjoy them again, then £500 on a turntable (Rega P3-24 with decent £100 cartridge) will be a good investment and lots of fun.

If you don't already have the LPs - and just want to make the TT a 'competing' format with your CD transport/Chord QBD DAC - then I am not sure there is much point.

i like vinyl the whole feel, sound and something so rewarding about the whole process

however as above if you have no vinyl its an expensive fad - i tried and kept buying albums but nearly everything i bought i had on cd and 99 times out of 100 listened to the cd to save me getting up and turning it over!

i tried failed and sold everything on!

Not that surprised a NAD transport and 3k worth of DAC won that battle
to be honest, not even sure £500 of Rega P3 would do it either.'

You may find £500 not enough to compete or better the QBD.

If you have only £500 to spend but are willing to upgrade over time the Pro-Ject RPM 5.1 could be a good investment @ around £500. Later you could add a speed box for around £100 and a nice Ortofon cartridge from the Rondo range, these prices vary. From a personnel viewpoint i had this set up until only recently and it was an accomplished performer with good isolation.

The point is whether you ever have heard a "good" TT" , which could be a P3-24 and a TTPSU plus a good cartridge think appr. 500 for this catridge only+ Phono Stage.

You easily end up now at a price of 1500 Pounds. So for 500 Pounds no chance to reach the sound of your existing setup, however I would bet that the before mentioned TT combination will reach your existing level or will be even better.

If you go further , i.e. a Linn LP 12 - Majik + ok cartridge + Phono stage -no chance for your existing system.

Some other people of course put it right, you need some records to play.

Thanks everyone, I thought as much. I think Ill stick to further investment in my CDP set up.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to give me your advice.

Regards

Did you mean the QDB DAC?

I'm not surprised your CD combo worth a few thousand was better than a turntable worth a couple of hundred. Bit like me lining up against usain bolt in the 100m.

Don't know what you were trying to prove, nor why you even posed the question.

from my recent experience, if you want the very best sound and willing to spend (BIG) then turntables any day. I would say up to £5K, cd player still the king of souce.
