i have a roksan xerces, its an old one, i picked it cheap (£200) but i have had nothing but trouble since day one! it needed a proper good service to start with then unfortunately there were no transit bolts and the ones that roksan sent were the wrong ones so on its way back from service somthing must have gone wrong as we couldnt get it to play for more than a few mins without the band coming off the motor. then finaly the motor sheared off its mount. and thats how it has stayed, i looked in to getting it fixed but it sounded as though it might cost £400+

my first question .. is this worth doing? i know its suposed to be a good bit of kit but for the moments it did work it sounded a touch thin!

the whole experience has just made me want to get something new/newish that would be less fuss once it is set up!

second question whats it worth in its condition if i were to stick it on ebay? as i said it is an old one it has a tiny bit of its black coating missing off the case it has a tabritz arm and a oc9 the rest of it is in great knick mechanically the bearing is amazing - with the bands off it span more freely than a new lp12 it was sat next to in the place i had it fixed! the power suplly is an early one i think! i also have the original hifi rack that i would sell with it at it has the perfect fitting isolation platform and it says xerces on it so it would be daft to keep it really.

3rd qestion if i do sack it off what could i get for the money i would get for it plus maybe a bit of extra investment i think i would be happy with spending a total of £750 maybe a grand at a push

to give you an idea of my taste in hifi i have a naim 82 pre with a 180 power and a hicap with flatcapped cd5 and pmc fb1+

4th question if i do get a new deck is there any bits from my current kit worth keeping for use on the new kit?

I think, given your previous knowledge of the TT, my inkling would be to unmount the tabriz and OC9 and sell them separately (get a good macro photo of the stylus on the OC9 to help sell it).

This should give you around £300ish (maybe even breaking the Xerxes to sell the bearing?) to put towards a new TT - at this price break, you have to consider the Radius V at around the £1k mark...

I run a Radius V with Ortofon 2M Blue into my 102/180 combo, and it sounds great...

Wow, that turntable for that price regardless of condition is a deal and a half! You'll get way more back than for what you bought it for!

Oh just get a mac.

Seriously, keep your smashing Naim kit, and the PMC's are peaches and not to be sent packing. No sir. You've got a thumping HiFi mate, just need a good (and functioning) table. I'm in love with VPI's offerings at present, but you can't go wrong with Regas and Pro-Jects if you don't want to splash large. My Xpression is excellent and I know I can get miles more out of it with a cartridge upgrade.,
