turning off at the mains

Each evening, when turning off my kit, I turn it to standby then turn it off where possible - telly and amp, but not possible for bd player/freesat. Someone once told me this was the best way to power down.

I was wondering if, rather than going to standby and then off, would it work to go to standby then turn all off at the plug socket - would this mean all of my kit's fine tuning and calibration would be lost, or is there sufficient residual power (generally speaking) to maintain this info. If so, for how long (again, generally speaking).

Cheers

I always turn everything off at the mains with no problems. I go on holiday for a week at a time and I have never lost any settings. I assumed they were stored in non volatile memory. Relevant kit: Oppo 83, Onkyo 875, Pioneer PDP 5090, Humax freesat PVR

me too, i have always turned it all off individually & then flicked it all off at the mains, never had any issues with memory loss etc

Shouldn't be a problem, most bits of kit have capacitors specially designed to provide power to the on board memory when you remove the mains. That said, the clock on my old VCR only lasted about 5 minutes without mains power!
