Toshiba SD370E does not seem to be decoding dark scenes properly

In dark scenes (which are basically shades of black) the number of shades is reduced. There are maybe 3 shades and I can see where one finishes and another starts, rather than a gradient. This looks simpler to the type of thing you get with divx/xvid compression. It lookes simeler to the solorize affect used in video editing, except it is with various shades of black. This is being viewed through a video projector. Do I need to return the player or am I missing something?

My SD370E just broke down, only weeks after receiving it (it just freezes and has to be unplugged). Its away for repair/replacement, but when I get it back, I'll have a look and see if I have the same problems as you. Can't say that I had noticed it in the short period that I had it working though.
