I just picked up the April copy of What Hi Fi and was looking at the review of the Toshiba 42SL738B, summarised with:

"Unable to reach class-leading performance"

It received three stars in total, a bit miffed, because I thought it was a good LED TV for the price and considering the amazon reviews, so just curious as to what the issues with it? I understand the sound is less than ideal - hopefully this can be rectified with a good sound system though. The cost of the TV was £480 including postage from Amazon.

I'm also curious as to why you would give SCART In a -1 also, I'm pretty sure there are a number of SCART sockets on the TV (2 in total).

All will be revealed tomorrow I guess, but curious as to other owners feedback on the TV as well.

Well, as it says in the review, the spec isn't that competitive – there's no Freeview HD tuner or networking capabilities – the sound is poor and the picture could be better.

Yes, it's a big screen for relatively little money, but you can buy better performance for a similar price. The LG 42LD490, for example, is a similar price, has a Freeview HD tuner and great sound plus a good picture.

It does have Scart, as we mentioned in the review. The -1 in the Buying Guide is a mistake, apologies, I'll get our data manager to fix it. Incidentally, the original review was in our March 2011 issue, which is a month old. Review will be online soon.

The OP is referring to the Buyer's Guide entry for the Toshiba in the April issue - which does indeed (mysteriously) say -1 for Scarts. We'll amend that database glitch... Sorry!

We'll also get the full review online, which should clarify things further.

I guess the reason I'm confused is that it's an LED TV for a good price - that said I didn't notice the lack of the HD tuner in the features.

If the LG truly is a better LCD TV (it isn't LED backed) then I'll probably return the Toshiba and replace it with the LG one.

Many thanks for the advice.

Of course if you don't need the HD tuner and your happy with the picture, as well as getting it for a good price, do you really need to change it? As long as you are happy that's all that counts.
