Our equipment is on an open rack in the corner of the lounge next to a sofa. We have a Lotty rocking toy which nicely fills the gap across the front of the rack. Little laddo is now 21 months old and so far not really bothered touching the stuff. He has now started to play around near the speaker stands for the KEF 2005 front speakers. We just tell him to leave them alone, move him away and distract him with some toy or book. They've stayed upright so far.

The second hi-fi in the spare room was another matter. By doing random button pressing and knob turning he soon sorted himself out. Nothing like the surprise of Radio 1 blasting out at a high volume to scare them away.

You could always just pack the stuff away for a while, cos if the baby develops colic (I wouldn't wish that on any parent) then you may not have the time, energy or inclination for movie watching.

Any suggestions out there for something more of the functional variety that will provide daddy a small amount of hope once the rugrat gets mobile?

Stands Unique do equipment stands with glass sides and doors. They also do a 'Kiddy Cabinet Kit' to make it more difficult to open the doors! They're not the cheapest, but I would recommend them.

I don't have any children, but I do have a pair of African Grey parrots, who have the freedom of the house. I caught one of them a few years ago trying to take the control flap off the front of my old Philips TV. When I'm out, I have to put a selection of inflatable toys around/on top of my TV, equipment rack & speakers to deter them!
