To upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question?

I currently have a 42" panasonic 1080i (th42px60b) which I use with a ps3 for bluray. Somehow the picture quality seems unimpressive, not bad, but not great. I am toying with changing the tv or the bluray, or both! I've been offered a sony 46" lcd with freesat, not sure of the model (w5810 ring any bells?) and a s560 bluray player for £1100. A good deal, I think, but will it gain me a significant improvement? Any suggestions?

Hi Mr Jeff - go for it! I have just upgraded from Pioneer 434 (5 years old and 1080i) used with Sony BD550 (and so did not get a true BD picture) to the new Panasonic 58V10. The reason was simple - to get true 1080p picture quality. In fact, because the Sony Blu Ray would not talk to the new Panasonic TV and auto switch on off with the TV I have just bought a Panasonic BD80 Blu Ray player. The Blu Ray now switches on the TV when played, puts it on the right HDMI input, and even when switched off then switches the TV back to the right HDMI port for Sky HD - and only one controller is used for both!

The upgrade results are markedly better and are well worth it. The BD picture on the 1080i TV is so much brighter, clearer and has real depth and as my wife says - amazing as if what you see is in the room with you. This change in picture quality going to 1080p was as great in picture quality as when I went from SD to Sky HD pictures at 1080i. The Sky HD picture is also better but the difference is not as great as it shows 1080i the same as before but with clearer and later technology.

As the Pioneer did not have an inbuilt digibox I now have one of those - excellent picture and EPG - as well as a Freesat which is not connected. I will wait until more HD channels are on it before changing from Sky. All in all, very pleased with the upgrade to 1080i and the cost is well worth it for the extra quality you get.

Regards Brook
