I have a 1st generation PS3 which I use occasionally for playing Blu-Rays (2D and 3D) and DVDs. As my PS3 is set up for on line gaming, the sound (optical) goes through my amp to avoid lag and as such I understand that am I not getting the best sound out but am too lazy to connect the HDMI from the TV to Amp every time I want to watch a film.

Therefore I am considering purchasing a separate BDP with both the video and sound connected through my amp with HDMI. Do you think I will get any visual and sound benefits, and if so what player would you recommend?

I have a Panasonic bdp230 upstairs and a Sony s-3100 (won in a comp) downstairs.

It's not night and day when comparing to the PS3, but I prefer the Sony, it's quicker and it connects to my NAS to play music and movies, so far without a hitch. The Panasonic probably has the better picture, but it's clunky, freezes quite often when trying to access network options, to the point where you have to unplug the unit.

Would be the Sony for me, maybe something higher up the range may suit you?

I have just replaced my old style fat PS3, which now resides upstairs, mainly to stop annoying the wife, with a cheap Panasonic DMPBT130,

The PS3 was connected by HDMI and optical to the AV receiver, and since i have an earlier Samsung smart TV, i used the PS3 to process the firms stored on a NAS, the TV wasn't that goo with it,

There DB130 is pretty good with that and possibly slightly better than the PS3, and a fair bit better with a bluray disc, sound wise i cant really tell as i have a cheap loan receiver while mine is being repaired.

Definetly go for the upgrade, I made the jump several years ago to a Denon BT2500, the sound and picture improvement was astonishing.

There are some who say there is no difference but they are obviously using cheap players.

Some of the guys here (including myself) and some that have left started off with a PS3 as a Bluray player. All of them moved on to dedicated Bluray players (Pioneers at the time, mostly) and seen improvements, and this was before we started dealing with Oppo. The Oppo will do most of what the PS3 will do (audio streaming etc) plus other benefits - and also load/play faster.
