Time to upgrade? Feedback desired.

First of all, it's been a while since I last browsed these forums, but I'm glad to be back.

We are currently building a house where I've been able to make a portion of it into a dedicated home-theatre (4 x 4.5 metres / 13 x 15 feet) and I am now on the market to research what projector and projector screen I'd like, when I'm suddenly faced with the opportunity to perhaps also upgrade my reciever, hence this post.

I saw an add where someone is selling a "Grandview Cinema Multiformat 16:9 / 2.35:1 100"" projector screen, which I thought looked good, but the same person selling this also have a Yamaha Aventage RX-A 3020 reciever for a decent price, which led me to wonder - should I upgrade and perhaps try to get a good deal on both items?

I currently have a Denon AVR 2809 reciever (set up for 5.1 with Monitor Audio Silver RX8) and have been very satisfied with it (5.1, tv and music), and I am basically wondering how big of an upgrade it would be?

Feature-wise I know I'd use the built in streaming option and it seems a tad more "future proof", but the most important thing for me is the sound (movies/tv first hand, music second). I'm also curious as to how the YPAO calibration compares to the Audyssey MultEQ XT I've got on the Denon.

In short, I'd value any comments on pros/cons for upgrading to the Yamaha reciever from the Denon, I've been away from the home theatre forums and magazines for quite some time so I feel quite out of the loop.

Obviously, if anyone has any comments/thoughts on the projector screen "Grandview Cinema Multiformat 16:9 / 2.35:1 100"" (albeit this is in the recievers forum), thoughts on that is also welcome.

Hi Daniel and welcome back to the nut house that is the Whathfi forums. Though things do seem to have calmed of late.

I have to say I don't know the first thing about projector screens so can't help you there. But for your room size (not much different to mine) I think a 100" screen would be grand and if you are going for or have an anamorphic lens you can can use the screen in one position and let the lens morph the picture from 4:3, 16:9 or 21:9 thus getting rid of the black masking top and bottom of features in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. That way you could have some nice curtains to pull up either side of the picture when watching a 1.78:1 or 1.33:1. just like the cinema does.

Haing read you are setting up a room for a dedicated home cinema have you heard about Dolby Atmos? This requires speakers in the ceiling and an AVR capable or Dolby Atmos. So you set up could be 5.1.2 the .2 being the ceiling channels or 5.1.4, 5.2.4 if your AVR has 2 subwoofer outputs and also 7.1.2, 7.1.4 7.2.2 or 7.2.4.

Hope that doesn't confuse you. As you are in a good spot to possibly build a fauls ceiling to house the speakers you might want to check it out. It's the new thang. Hence New Toys Ahead.

In my experience, the Yamaha will be superior to the Denon. But you should demo and compare.

As Glacialpath mentioned, have you considered Dolby Atmos? If yes, look at Yamaha RX-A2040 or 3040.
