Time Delay with Airfoil and YouTube

Hi all,

So I'm streaming (wirelessly) from my MacBook to an AE, taking an optical signal from there (via an MF vDac) to my hifi.

This works fine with Spotify, but if the application is Firefox, there's a very noticable delay of about a second, which leads to lip-sync problems (between a YouTube video and the sound, say).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it common? Is there a solution?

Yes, and no. There is a deliberate sync delay with Airfoil so that it can make sure that all the clients on the network are getting the signal at the same time. Nothing you can do about it, as far as i know...

Try using modern tech and u wont have the problem.

Lets face it - u cant even stream youtube without sync loss........not great is it.

Has it? I can't say I'd noticed. However, before I tell you what my education and experience is, perhaps you could tell us how to solve the OP's problem with 'modern tech'?

Oops, I didn't realise that this would be one of those topics (didn't even mention cables)...thanks for the quick reply, John, though it's obviously disappointing. Not properly Apple's fault, I guess, since they don't do AirFoil, but I wonder whether any readers have found ways around this, or another way of streaming to AE without lip-sync problems.

Well it is kind of the AE's fault since it introduces a 2-second buffer, which is obviously not great for video. Airfoil comes with a Video Player so that you can do it with DVD and other video files, but it won't work with Youtube files, unfortunately.

FYI, hedgehog - Airfoil 4 now has a web mode which will sync audio on web video like youtube. $10 upgrade cost, apparently - just downloading now...

Not tired mine yet - downloaded an upgraded version last night but not used it with video yet. Is the upgrade a separate purchase for existing customers do you know John? I'm just heading out so not had a chance to look on their site. Thanks for the heads-up though; good call.
