I put on my B5 boxset dvd on my Sony Bravia earlier, and was watching for a while and a bit depressed by the image. A little washed out, and indistinct...until I remembered I had recently set it all up with the THX optimiser on the Incredibles DVD.

Not wanting to mess about, halfway through seasom 2, episode 6, I decided to select the default settings...

Thank you Sony. My slightly aging DVD media suddenly found life, where before was a sterile mess!

(I had been messing around with PS3 settings for 5 minutes before thsi too!)
I may have a play tomorrow, as I am sure I can tweak it better, but I will use my eyes, rather than a set of 'calibrated' images...

Indeed. And I know what you're getting at, cheeky ******. The most important test in anything as subjective as audio and visual is whether you like the sound, or look yourself...sod the specs.

Hi Frog, i agree with you entirely when you say your gonna use your eyes instead of using a disc etc. I started by using the THX optimiser found on most fox titles, i used it out of curiosity really but i found the same result as you that it looked washed out as i believe where it tells you to set your brightness is far to high which in return gives the "washed out" look! I think it gives you a kinda starting point as to where the levels should be, but its all down to your very own preference as to how a picture should look , after all your the one thats watching it. I have my contrast level set at around 75% which is very close to the optimiser test disc for my brightness i have that set lower than what they recommend & the same with the colour i have that set lower, & i find my picture amazing IMO ! As they say " if it looks good to you then its good enough!! Happy tweaking !!

I'm on the same page. As Andrew often says, it's all down to personal preference. For my taste THX is waaay too washed out. It's complicated too by the fact that contrast and black/chroma levels vary from disc to disc,,,,
