The first few hours with Studio 110s

As I mentioned elsewhere I took delivery of some proac studio 110s this morning and I thought I'd post my initial thoughts in case anyone was interested.

A nice quad system arrives on monday so all I have to drive them for now is my trusty ca 540a. I bought them second hand and they've had a couple of months use.

My first thought was that they seem incredibly quick, with spot on timing, especially with drum patterns. I love it when a speaker conveys a drum pattern with such exact timing and punch that it takes on a life of its own and presents itself differently to how you've heard before. The fronts of notes seem really crisp, especially guitar sound. I was concerned about bass having come from floorstanders but I needn't have worried. Craig M. mentioned that the treble was a bit prominent and he might be right- although I'm hoping thats more to do with my cambridge amp.

I've been listening all afternoon to loads of stuff - just letting itunes shuffle - and I'm listening to whole songs I'd usually skip through. Its been fun listening. I've not had that much (what I would consider) expensive kit in my house but they are certainly leagues ahead of the missions and kefs I'm used to. I would have liked to have heard them with the 840a/c I've just taken back as it sounds pretty marvellous with the lowly 540a.

£400 with atacama stands... money well spent it would seem. Hope thats useful/interesting to someone - roll on the quad 909!

A nice old selection actually - some sufjan stevens, fleet foxes, nitin sawney - The proacs seem to particularly love the whitest boy alives first lp - really picking out the intricate rhythm detail. Oh and some Christopher cross to test the all important cheese factor!

I know I should have listened to the quad 12Ls but I just decided to trust to luck and take a flyer on the proacs. Glad I did!

Hey Ear. The 840 kit was pretty good but in the end just seemed to lack a bit in the middle for me. A lot of my favourites sounded a bit harsh. That said, the proacs could probably have evened that out.

EDIT I don't think richer sounds helped the 840s by bundling kefs iq5se with them free. Made my cats ears go flat back against her head! She doesnt do that with the ca/proac set up...

They have to let us have a hobby. They shop (although I'm blessed as mine hates shopping more than I do).

Mines very understanding - although I got some strange looks today when I bought two tescos granite chopping boards and proudly put them under my stands.

Cheers lord.

Im with you on the username thing too. not that im saying it does make you seem a tool. just that i always pick silly combos of my name and D.O.B. I mean, wheres my imagination? Then i come up with decent ones and i want to change 'em.

the 110s are on my far-too-long "shortlist", but im listening to, er, something(s...?) in the week, all being well, that might mean ill call off the search.

I have the same speakers and I love them!! At least until I get something even better. But for now, I am quiet satisfied with 110! And I love treable a bit prominent, it is easier to hear all the details. They go soo well with Naim Nait XS. I get to hear some things I have never heard before on the cd. Can't resist a single day without music coming from those boxes. (all of them

Good choice! Enjoy!!
